Am running WinXP SP2. When I try to open IE, I get a message, "Iexplore.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Upon closing the msgbox, IE closes. In the Error Box, the module name is "unknown ". Would consider re-installing IE, BUT, another user on the same PC has no problem with IE!!

Have tried removing all temp Internet files but no change.

Looked at the Knowledge Base article #318378, "How to Reinstall or Repair IE and Outlook Express in Windows XP ". Started the first recommended step in article: In RUN box type sfc /scannow. This immediately asked for the WinXP CD and would not accept the SP2 CD. It cannot be a system wide problem because of the other user not being impaired.

Any help on where to start would be appreciated.

    Chuck

You're SP2 CD will most likely be the SP2 update only. (unless you bought a full XP SP2 disk in the last couple of weeks?). So to do an sfc /scannow you will need to use your original XP install disk, and should reinstall SP2 if the scannow task replaces any system files, as they *may* be older files.

Follow the rest of the repair recommendations in that article.

As your login only has a problem, you may have a problem with your login profile and may need to transfer your settings to a new profile and delete the problematic one.

    Hi Paul,

Many thanks for the lead and for the link to Article 811151. Just what the doctor ordered.
