    Westside,

In the process of exploring why the email were not showing, I looked at the contents. I did that by "opening" it in Wordpad. Then in my late night fatigue that is how I began copy/pasting. From there it never occured to me to do the simple right click copy/paste. Not checking my basic assumptions. Also, because it was readable in Wordpad I assumed it was a text doc.

Anyway, using right-click: same results - no show. I did delete the renamed .msf file (The renamed old inbox was there from previous paste so I deleted it and .msf before recopying).

    Thanks.

    Scott

    Ramona, dscott, Westside ...

I'm having a tough time following all of this, partly because I have Tbird set up somewhat differently than you guys do.

I firmly believe that the profile folder shouldn't be in the same location as the program folder. In fact, I have mine on a different partition, entirely. That way, if something happens to my system and I have to reformat the OS and programs partitions, my email files (which are in the profile folder), along with all the rest of my data, are safe.

Dscott, since you have your old email settings on another partition, try this: move the Mail folder in your new profile to a temporary location, then copy the old Mail folder, with all of its files, to the new profile and see if you can read the mail it contains.

Also, when installing a new version of either Tbird or FireFox (I wish they'd been able to use either Phoenix or Firebird), it shouldn't be necessary to uninstall the older version. Nor do I recommend installing over the older version. Instead, either delete the old program folder or (my preference) move it to a temporary location, then install the new version to the old location, which the installer should recognize. Your old profile will be recognized, along with all of your settings. I've been using the same profiles in both programs for the better part of a year.

    Scott,

What is the Mail Quota for your ISP? Since the oldinbox file is 15 MB, I'm wondering if this is why you can't open the file. Most ISP's have a 10 MB limit on the Mail Accounts.

    Scott, and Members/Guests,

I asked Scott to send me the oldinbox file, so I could take a look at it, and this was what was discovered. The file contained deleted files, and the Inbox folder had not been compacted recently. That resulted in the huge 15 MB file. As it turns out there were actually only four messages, and no real loss of mail...

I was actually able to read the file by copying it to Netscape 7.2. Don't ask why, because I don't know yet...

    Jim,

Would love to take ALL the credit but the MAN of the hour is our own captjlddavis who wrote this page for my Netscape Solutions:
    http://home.att.net/~cherokee67/restoredelmail.html

The codes on this page tell you if the message has been deleted. If it is still in the Inbox, when viewed in WordPad, then it becomes obvious that the Inbox hasn't been compacted.

    Cheers!

Jim, Ramona, Westside and all ~

Thanks for all your suggestions, probing and diligence with this issue. Again, I am learning a bunch.

Ramona, you asked about my ISP. I'm not aware of any quota. I do know that If I have our email clients set for save on server for 4 days then we get messages saying we're over quota. At 3 days we don't. However, I assumed that once we downloaded messages into tbird inbox they're there as physically as they can be being only oppen and closed switches ;) . Not sure how this question related to the issue we were looking at.

A while back you asked about duplicate folders. By that I meant the inbox, sent, trash and junk folders. It seems simpler to me since I'm the only one on this computer to have the global settings - and then to use filters and folders for all the different kinds of mail: Invest, Fitness, Computer, Work, etc. I have several email addresses that almost all are forwarded to my client and filtered. I am interested, though in how you and others have set up your email clients.

Jim, It's been a busy week here so haven't completely digested your suggestions on placing the program folders on a different partition. It usually takes me an unhurried, well-rested read ;) Probably Friday. Am interested, also, on how others have their folders set up vis a vis Jim's suggestion.

Running late, will address anything I've overlooked later.

    Scott
