Grisoft announces the end of support for AVG version 6.0 effective on December 31, 2004 for technical reasons. This version has been available since 1999. It's structure does not allow for further improvements planned for version 7 nor improvements of detection techniques expected to come in the future.

End of support means we will no longer provide program updates or Virus Database updates for version 6.0 and therefore, within days, this version will not protect against new virus outbreaks!

Current AVG 6.0 users should upgrade to AVG 7.0. Information on upgrading to version 7.0 can be found at http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_upgrade.php.

    Substitute for AVG

Since we will have to pay for AVG V 7, what is the consensus of another equivalent free av. I've heard good things about Avast and EZTrust.

What do you'll(I'm from Texas) think?

Even though I already use AVG7, thanks for the tips brett

    Seing as how most users are well aware of problems that a Virus can cause;

How come they are not already using the newer AVG7 ?

One good case of infection can cost FAR MORE than the few bucks that the AV software may cost.

There are places where we can cut corners and still be OK. But Virus Detection/Protection is NOT ONE OF THEM.

Also AVG 7 has updates ALMOST EVERY DAY. Also every so often there is a upgrade ( update ? ) to the program itself.

Personally, I have no fault at all with AVG 6.0 free. It is also updated every couple of days, and is one of the few standard virus scanners that works fine on all OS's including W2K3! I only hope AVG 7.0 free, when it's released end of November is as compatible across all OS's.

I think that AVG 6 Free has run its course anyway. Yesterday, I was trying out different AV scanners and came up with a total of six missed viruses from AVG 6 Free. But also, that means that others were missing some also.

I tried to see if I could get into that second generation AVG free. I signed up three time, but no link e-mailed to me. It's like the site was a spoof or something.

I now am trying AVAST HOME. It seems to be pretty good. It came up with a couple of viruses off the bat. The free version doesn't have a scan scheduler. But it can be set to run on boot. I just got a free Windows reboot scheduler.

I have run into the same thing.( not as many tho ) I ran online scanners and the AVG7 and it found a couple that the others missed.

Even though I do have AVG7 onboard I DO NOT TRUST it alone I did not trust NAV alone either.

It may take a few minutes to run both onboard and online but it can pay off.

I do not beileve there is an AV program availabe that it 100% foolproof.

I'm trying the AVG 7 Free Beta right now. It's reminenscent of AVG 6 Free in operation. I back it up with three online scans. I don't run the online scans all the time. When the mood strikes, I'll try one of them in a rotation.

If any of the secondary pops a virus, then I will run a bunch of av programs.

    Im not spam;)

I've been reading your different posts and Im new here so please don't think I know it all tho sure could tell you some stories since I use to work in tech/cust care suport in the big old Silicon Valley in Ca. I worked for a wonderful large graphics company and was so glad we didn't have to deal with Gates or Case. IMO :) from experience and gee even got a brand new 2nd brand new sysem all thanks goes to Microsoft so yes had to vent.

I have used Avast for 2yrs now and with all they offer ok, not the world but after using almost all the AV's, spending lots of money and still virus after virus.
I downloaded the free home edition with weekly updates and a free cleaner as well if you well want to not do a through scan once a week, so important.
Then you kind of do the cheat sheet :) virus cleaner and after Norten, left me with oh no virus I then had Avast tell me that throught the deep scan that there were 3 viruses that Norton gee forgot  :(
I read the ratings and not one ok maybe one said nothing but great about it.

If you want it for the company then sure there is cost but funny its from the UK and there company quote.
"we would rather see the home user with virus free to help stop all this virus
mess" (sorry its been 2yrs so maybe I didn't quote exactly) but Im glad at least they even have support.
When you have a virus they ask you if you want to please send the virus to them, from the safe chest. Or you can decide what to do. I hope you at least give it a try and see, just today it found 3 viruses and was doing the cleaner so now its in through mode, while I type this to you.

I hope this helps all of you who lost your AV and what have you got to lose but get rid of some of these bugs. I won't waste your time on the other things I have found and why because when your stuck on a couch for about 2yrs with nothing to do from being sick. Its kind of interesting to read all about so much.
Maybe this will give me hope to finally find a good Doctor as well.

Take care and maybe soon we can get Gates to give up some of his trillions and help us out here. Im going to look in to the firefox or foxfire  and see so maybe I can get rid of microsoft. :)

PS: sorry another thought came to me(your all thinking no) I have been lucky to have worked with some fine men and what I have found out is its all hands on and trial and error.
I won't use any tech support except Avast, beacause from experience, many of you know more then they do and believe me have tried many tech support people. Just keep trying and soon if you feel your not as good as the best  you will be I know since 99 the stories I could let you know but hey this isn't a bash place but Im sick and tired and just wanted to give you the only AV that I know for free that so many have used it and thanked me I said "Why not thank Avast ".
Oh it also won't let any mail go through to you but will let you know in your mail why and well Im getting carried away, guess its nice to have human conact for a change.
Thanks for lettting me bug you all. :D
