*I'm reposting this now, becuase now reading back on the other one, it didn't make much sense... hope this is better!* Bare with me, I'm freaking!!!

    Here goes:

It's an older comptuer, Compaq bought in 98.. been upgraded with memory/HD, everything has been ok.. This morning all I did to it was adjust the power settings b/c my bf doesn't turn it off at night and I was trying to save it a bit.. but someone then told me that turning it on and off is actally worse for it... so I don't know if that is the problem..

But, we've been trying to startup now and it's on about the 10th go... a blue screen does come up for a nanosecond but can't makeout what it says.

Stop C000221 has failed {Bad Image checksum} shell header is Possibly Corrupt

I've tried starting in safemode and that didn't work, it just kept rebooting, tried to go to "last known good configuration ", just rebooted again.. trying to boot from disc now, tried once but I don't know the password for the administrator Also tried debugging, that didn't do anything either

Just did a chkdsk from prompt. said there were errors but they were fixed. Then I get a box pops up and says:

" procedure entrypoint se could not be located in the dynamic link library kernel 32.dll "

then under that last error box... this one came up:

    User Interface failure

to logong user interface.dll failed to load

contact your system administrator to replace dll or restore

(in case anyone is reading this... haven't gotten any help yet... :-( )

I did a repair install of the XP and now am at a point where I need to activate windows and I can't do it. it asks if I want them to figure out my connection automatically or do I have a proxy? I don't know! I can't do it, it says it cannot find a connection. I have cable modem, and no land line. It won't let me connect to the internet and was wondering if someone could help me with this part.

    I'd REALLY appreciate it!!

Open Control Panel and click on Network Connections and click on New Connection Wizard. Follow the instructions and it should establish a connection for you. If that fails, call your ISP for further guidance. They will enjoy helping you since you are paying them for the service.

    Good Luck.

    Hey there!

I haven't gotten past the registration/activation yet. I can't get to the desktop! It keeps telling me it's unable to get a connection...nothing has changed there... is there another way to get to the panel?

It should give you the option of cancelling and activating later. Look within the message screen for that.

It just takes me back to our logon screen and tells me how many email there are waiting for me, LOL!! I cannot get past this.

Should I do the "automatically detect settings "

    or

Use a proxy server ? It asks for a address and port.... ???

Chances are you don't use a proxy so try the automatically detect. If no joy, call your ISP for proxy settings.

Thanks! One more question. I have this on 2 computers at present, will that be a problem when/if I call to get it registered? They can't disable it or anything can they? I just need to get my info off that HD then I'm good!

    :)

You'll not be able to register one copy of XP on two computers at the same time. Besides being contrary to the agreement you accepted in the EULA, it is on record at MS so when you try to do the second activation you'll need to explain what happened to the other computer.
