Does anyone know how to reactivate the auto disconnect box that normally pops up when IE or Outlook Express is closed down, asking if the user would like to disconnect from the Internet.
I think this must be a registry setting as I can't find an activation check box anywhere.

If that doesn't work, try launching IE or OE from the quick launch bar to bring up your dial up box rather than using the regular ISP connect icon. I found this method by trial and error using IE 5.5SP

Believe it or not, the "Disconnect when connection is no longer needed" setting controls whether or not that dialog box is displayed when closing IE with an active connection.

This should get your dialog box back.

Click on Start>Settings>ControlPanel>InternetOptions. Now click on the "Connections" tab and highlight your ISP connection in the "Dial Up Settings" box. Then click on Settings>Advanced. Now select the box titled "Disconnect when connection is no longer needed" and click on OK.

A friend of mine recently suffered a virus attack whivh required reinstallation of her copy of Windows 98. I also installed IE6 and OE6 for her.

At the moment the Advanced Settings from the Connections tab in Internet Settings is "Grayed Out" making it impossible to activate Automatic Disconnection.

Any suggestions how I might get this back?

Is their ISP listed in the box for "DialUp Settings" on that same screen?

Steve said via PM that selecting the "Disconnect when ..." setting in IE didn't work.

    Try this

Start>Run, key in Regedit and press enter. In the Left pane double left click on each of these.

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ CurrentVersion\Internet Settings

Once you've double left clicked on "Internet Settings" in the Left pane, you should see a value for EnableAutodisconnect appear in the Right pane. Right click on it and select Modify. Now change it to a value of

    01 00 00 00

Close Regedit and restart the PC.

Let us know what happens. If you don't find the EnableAutoDisconnect value, you may need to add it.

    Hi Folks

Just to follow up on my experience with this problem. I found that the registry fix for me wasn't the answer as the correct entry already existed.

To fix the problem on my friends computer I had to re-create the dial-up connection entry then delete the original. This then allowed me to access the 'advanced settings' dialog where I could then tick the option for auto disconnect.

Thanks everyone for your interest and I hope my experience helps someone else.

installed internet explorer over top of msn explorer and now have a buggy system

installed internet explorer over top of msn explorer and now have a buggy system.

I had to reinstall everything and to save time I used a msn explorer cd I got in the mail to install explorer 5.??.

Then after getting almost everything back to working order, the disconnect window started playing hide and seek.

It might sit there for 10 seconds or less than 1 second. But it was guaranteed to disappear every time before I had a chance to mouse the disconnect button.

I suspect I now have 2 different versions of explorer and they're beating each other up.

Yesterday I had to restore the registry a dozen times when ie6 hung while installing the net connection wizard stuff.

Is there a list of msn specific files and registry entries I can use to clean out all of the msn stuff ?

Or another better solution assuming there's not a dozen more bugs hiding with this mix and match epxlorer stuff ?
