    Hello

During the latest 2 months I have experienced a slow opening of the Office Programmes Word and Excel.

It is not everytime, but when the opening is slow, it takes about a minute to load.

It does not apply to other programmes, e.g. IE and OE. Only Acrobat Reader may be a little slow, but has always behaved in a slow manner.

My OS WIN98 2nd, Dell Inspiron 5000 (4 years old), 512 Mb Ram, IE 6.0, Firewall ZoneAlarm, Norton Antivirus with live-update and I often check for spyware etc.

I hope that somebody might suggest where to look for a possible explanation or even better a way to correct.

    Regards

Have you installed some apps over the last 2 months that start when Windows
    boots ?
Word and Excel use a lot of 16 bit resources to run.
    EyeDrives
Download this free utility and install it.
Boot Windows and then start EyeDrives.
What is the the % Figure in the "Load" picture ??
    regards

    Hello Merlin

I did install some apps but they have all be uninstalled again and left-overs removed also from Registry.

    EyeDrives gave the following info:
    Load % = 31
    Ram % = 47 (available 282 Mb)
    Swap % = 0 (available 1573 Mb)
    Used of C = 55%

    Regards

mariola, did you try a "Repair Office' from the original installation disk ?
EyeDrives shown load is not excessive, so Word/Excel must have internal problems somewhere ... keep posting - we will find them ...
Do you clean out "junk" files regularly ? log bak chk and so on
And temporary stuff from office and IE ?
If you use MS IE and MS Office you have to keep both of them clean from
old history files etc as these two apps are closely linked to each other.
    regards

    Hello Merlin

I followed your suggestion of making an Office-Repair from the original disks but it didn't accelerate the loading of word or excel.

I regularly use System Security Suite to delete all tmp files but I have not asked it to delete log and bak files. There are non chk files on my PC. Can all *.log and *.bak files be included like the *.tmp files for deletion?

And what do you mean by old history files relating to IE and Office?

    Appreciate your help.

    Best regards

Mariola, check your Norton AV options>general and see if the Office Plugin is checked. If so this will cause Norton to scan your Office applications each time they are started. Uncheck it and see if things speed up.

mariola, do you have osa.exe launched at Windows startup ?
If so, what happens if you remove it and reboot/load Excel or Word ?
Are you sure the shortcuts you use to Winword.exe and Excel.exe are
    direct and correct ?
If you double-click a .doc or a .xls file, do they take a long time to open ?
    regards

    Here's another option:

From the desktop, click on the Start button.
Select Programs and then Microsoft Outlook.
When Outlook opens, click on the Tools menu and select Options.
In the Options window, click on the Journal tab.
In the next window, remove any checks in the section labeled "Also record files from…"
    Click the Apply button.
    Click O.K.

    Hope this helps.

    Hello Plansdowne
I use Outlook Express and not Microsoft Outlook.

    Hi Merlin
I do not use osa.exe. It is not launched.

Yes, my problem has been appearing over a couple of months. It takes about a minute both to open and to close an Excel or Word file. But as I mentioned not everytime. Sometimes I may open 2 or 3 files (Excel and Word) without problems and having closed them and then tries to open a new Excel or Word file, then it took as mentioned up to one minute.

I have been away from my PC all day and this evening it seems that the files are opening normally again.

So the Office-Repair might have corrected something.

I will see tomorrow if the failure has gone forever or it reverts. I shall keep you posted.

In the meantime would you be kind enough to comment on the *.log and *.bak files and the old history files relating to IE and Office as stated in a previous reply/question.

    Thanks.

    Regards

    Hello again;

It doesn't matter whether you use Outlook or not. If Outlook is installed, please check the settings mentioned above (it happened to me and I never used Outlook either).

    Hello PLansdowne
I never finished the installation of Microsoft Outlook but now I did and there are no markings in the section: "Also record files from.. "

Having worked on my PC again today I seems that the loading of Word and Excel works OK again.

So conclusion may be the Office Repair did the job or something else has changed.

At this moment only IE is open but Eyedrives tells me 42% Loaded.

Could my problem also have something to do with too less system resources after having opened and closed various programmes. So to speak the resources have consumed by Windows and not restored?

    Regards
