    Hello all, new here. I'm experiencing an error just like the one in "http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=12928&highlight=browseui.dll "
    i noticed that she never replied to the status if her problem was fixed or not. I'm going to give the suggestions a shot and if they don't work, hopefully someone will have some insight. It happened after i installed a bunch of updates from winupdate (including IE6 and DirrectX9) however there were something like 18 critical updates and 10 ME updates so, i can't be sure which could have triggered the problem. I've called Microsoft and they said since scanreg /restore didn't work, they couldn't fix the problem until i got my hands on a ME disk (200 miles away (i'm at college), and i'm not even sure it's there, i tend to lose disks for comps i don't use reguarly)

    If anyone has any new insight i'll be sure to try that as well. Thanks for your help!

    ~Charles

    Well, i have tried all described in the previous thread, however, problem still there.

    one thing i did, was type in edit c:\windows\system.ini changed shell=explorer.exe to shell=progman.exe so that the system started in program manager, figuring i could repair IE from there, but, it's not in the add remove program slot, and when i try to uninstall IE, that fails as well.

    not sure how i got it to do this, but, one thing i did was import browseui.dll from a backup folder to the desktop (wasn't sure which folder it was in, now i know it should be in the system folder) but after that it errored and i couldn't figure out how to get back to that point. I was thinking of someone had a non corrupted copy of this file i could possibly put it on a cd/floppy and if i could get back to this screen, i could overwrite it. Anyone know what i'm talking about and if this is possible? Thanks again,

    ~Charles

    hey charles, thanks for the e-mail. the program manager can be accessed by inserting the windows boot disk, or pressing ctrl to get to the command prompt when you boot. type in edit c:\windows\system.ini go to the section labeled boot, and change:
    shell=Explorer.exe to: shell=Progman.exe
    exit out, and restart. the program manager should start then.
    somehow in this mode i found some command to pick file (select file) and put it here (browse for folder) i can't seem to find it again tho.
    if you go to file, run in the program manager, and type in control appwiz.cpl it will open a add/remove program properties box (i was trying to uninstall IE6 since i think that was the problem, but it wasn't there)
    Thanks for your help!

    Hi Charles,

    Thanks for the info. This particular file is in WINDOWS\SYSTEM - did you drop it in there?

    For everyone's info, I sent Charles a copy of the .dll file.

    Regards - Charles

    Thanks for all the help Charles, i fixed it w/o replacing the .dll file. I went through the program manager, file, run, browse. then found ie6setup.exe and ran it. i thought it had installed after running windows update, dl'ing it and clicking install, but i guess it didn't, i finished installing it and now everything runs fine again.
