hey guys, im new here, hopefully you guys can help me, My problem is that my computer randomly reboots, not like a normal restart where you see it sign off of window, but the screen just goes black for a second and then boots back up normaly, then it says "the system has recovered from a serious error ", I have AVG anti-virus (free edition) and when I run it, it tells me that I have no virus, I also have ad-aware and spybot search and destroy and I run them once a week, I have also run memory tests that have come back ok. This is a new computer, about 2 months old. I ordered it with no operating system, so I installed the OS myself (XP pro), I am now running service pack 2, but I think I got a virus before I had service pack 2, I was downloading something and and then my computer just rebooted randomly and ever since then I have had these problems. I really dont think its a hardware problem, but you guys are the pro's so you tell me what you think.

Oh wait I almost forgot, I read another thread on here about a guy who was having similar problems, and they told him to run a program called hijack or something like that, should I do this?

Hi mrdutt and welcome to the forum.

Hijackthis probably won't do any good at this point although maybe later.

For right now, we need more information about the crashes. The default when you install XP (and I have no idea why) is to have the system automatically restart after a crash leaving you with no clue what happened. The first and easiest thing to do is turn off that 'feature' so you will get a BSOD when it crashes since there is quite a bit of information on that page.

If we still can't solve it, there is a process detailed in This thread for generating a long dump file that contains lots more information but hold off on that.

For now, right-click My Computer, left-click properties then advanced => startup & recovery settings and uncheck Automatically Restart.

When you have your next crash, copy down all the information at the top part of the screen including the long string of numbers and post the information here.

Well, I did what you said about the turning off the automatic restart, but now I have a new problem, I was playing a game today, and all of a sudden, my computer started making this weird noise, it wasnt coming from my speakers, but it was coming from the actual computer itself. It sounded like some kind of an alarm or a fire engine, what in the world is going on with my computer????

Before we call in a priest, can you be a bit more specific about the noise? Hum? grinding sound? beep? error code? what?

Sounds like you have a motherboard monitor installed, or the BIOS has an alarm monitor activated. Could it be a CPU or system fan RPM alarm monitor. Maybe the alarm threshould is incorrectly set, or you have a genuine fault. Maybe one of your PSU voltages has fallen or risen above a set threshold. Maybe a CPU or system temperature alarm?

hey guys, now there is yet another problem, I went to play a game today (different game) and It loaded up no problem, but then about 5 seconds after it loaded up, it froze, so then I tried to get back to windows, so I pushed the windows key, and my monitor went to "stand by mode" where the green light turns orange and the screen turns off. So I moved my mouse and pressed keys on the keyboard to try to get the monitor to go back on and nothing happened, so I turned it off then on again and when it came on, the screen was black, but the monitor menu was on the screen. This is getting very weird. This computer is only a couple of months old, I ordered it from www.cyberpowerinc.com, I havnt tried calling tech support yet becuase I heard that they are pretty useless in helping you, unless you want to paying a bunch of money to ship it back to them, pay for new parts and labor, and then pay more to ship it back to your house.

    PLEASE HELP ME....

Hey guys, its been a while and although I havnt really been using my computer much, it has seemed to be running good until today. Today I was just browsing the internet and a blue screen came up, I did not know how to take a picture of it so I wrote down what it said so here it is,

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
    IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, Follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed, If this is a new installation ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need. If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press f8 to select advanced startup options, and then select safe mode.
    Technical information:
    ***stop: 0x0000000A (0x00000014, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x804E7412)
    Begining dump of physical memory
    Physical memory dump complete
Contact your system administrator or technical support group for further assistance. "

I have no idea what this means. This is the second time I have gotten this error, The first time I got this error was after I installed new drivers for my video card. (9800 pro 128mb) The new drivers were the catalyst 4.11's, could that be whats causing this?, someone please help me...

    Possibly?

Check for any later drivers for your Graphics card. If none, then try installing a previous driver package. You should be able to download from the catalyst archive site.

Fully uninstall the existing drivers before installing earlier or later drivers.

Might be other hardware drivers. You should update all your hardware. Might be worth uninstalling and disconnecting non essential devices and external hardware, and then through a process of ellimination reconnect one by one with latest drivers/software, allowing enough time to check for the error.

bump, I have done some research and I found out that this
stop: 0x0000000A error could be related to a certain driver, I thought it was the video driver because I didnt see the error until I updated to the cat 4.11's, but then I went back to the 4.10's and I got the error again......what should I do????, what does this stop: 0x0000000A error mean?

I had something similar happen just a few weeks ago. I suspected a failing power supply, probably the 3.3 volt rail for the CPU and memory. I swapped in a new supply and it's never happened again. The noise you hear, might it be a fan with a bearing going bad?

I've been having a very similar problem.
I don't mean to derail this thread to a new set of details, but for comparison sake only, here goes:

    MSI K8T Neo2 with a 3000+
    2x Corsair TWINX2048-3200PT
    2x 74Gb Raptors
    Saphire 9800 256

    Latest bios/drivers all
    default stable bios settings
Temperature is moderate (no OC yet)

This rig is mucho unstable. The ATI VPU recover tool is constantly detecting a hardware lock. I have disabled fast writes, reduced monitor refresh rates, done everything imaginable to get it stabilize it. Anywhere from 1-30 minutes after booting up the screen just goes blank. It doesn't seem to matter what I'm doing when this happens. Playing a game or using notepad - it just goes black as if the video card stopped working. The monitor indicator begins flashing amber indicating no signal.

At first I suspected a memory problem, but I've run memtest from memtest.org and can't get it to produce errors after 17 passes. My next step is to yank the video card and try an old GF2MX for a couple days to see if the problem remains or leaves with the Radeon.

Best of luck to the thread originator.
