Windows XP system Advertising start-up POP-UP Screen!!!

I've been using XP for some time now, And I've a permanent connection to the internet via Cable.

Whenever I start-up the computer, every now and then a F*!@#ing pop-up screen comes up advertising links!!!

I can't believe it! I absolutely hate pop-up advertising links! I detest people who write malicious code on websites or programs that intentionally change your system configuration or internet options for their own purposes!

Can someone help me get rid of it for me? I don't know where to go to destroy this! When I start up, maybe every 2nd or 3rd time, a internet-explorer pop-up screen shows. It doesn't have any browsing tools on it, and a link to www.search.com/ starts up. It's titled "Platinum Links" does anyone have a clue??
