I'm having a problem with Office 2000, actually just Word, everything else seems to work fine, at least Excel and Outlook.

When I try to open Word, the splash screen comes up and just sits there, if I run the mouse over the splash screen the arrow becomes an hourglass. That's all I can do though is move the mouse, I have to power off, wait a little and turn it back on again. If I don't try to get into Word the computer runs fine.

I've tried uninstalling - reboot - clean registry - reboot - install. I've tried running repair (from within Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel). I removed Works as well.

I've now run out of ideas, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The computer is a Dell Dimension L500CX with 64M RAM running Win98SE

    the word

That's a popular 4 star box by dell. Little skimpy on the RAM tho. However you are not getting low resourse errors. Can you try clicking on winword in windows explorer C:\program files\microsoft office\office winword.exe?:)

Same thing, splash screen and everything hangs.

System resources, at a fresh boot, are 94% free and Word won't open.

When I first started this I was getting the message about not enough memory, shutdown some programs, etc. etc. and that was after a fresh boot and minimal programs running (virus scan and scheduler for tape backup system). After the uninstall and reinstall that went away, but I still can't open Word.

Find normal.dot, the defualt template that gets corrupted pretty easily and rename it to normal.old. It'll get recreated next time you open word...

Outstanding I hadn't even thought of the normal.dot file, that certainly fixed it.

I'll have to file that one away for future reference.

    Thanks for the help :D
