When ever I shutdown my computer, It takes about 5 minutes, sometimes 10 minutes to actually turn off.
All the time , while it's turning it's self off, boxes pop up, saying particalar programs are not responding, and if I click "END NOW" I might lose saved data.

    What should I do?

    Hello Nic,

Do you leave any program open before shutting down? What's running when you want to shut down? Bring up Task Manager before and make a note of running processes. Bring up TM by hitting ctl -shift - esc and the process tab.

    Losing Data:
Lets say you were working on a Word doc and decided to shut down. If you didn't close out the doc, then you would lose data - the contents of that doc or the changes/additions you made.

Otherwise that message about "losing data" is a generic one - meaning that if you closed out what you were working on, safe to ignore.

    Regards - Charles

    Hello,

    - Yes, but it is only Spysweeper, & norton Antivirus

    - I understand that if you try and shut down while you are using a program like word for instance, you would lose your data, but I don't do that, I make sure that all programs like that are closed (with the two exceptions above)

    - My computer hasn't always done this, & it's not even 10 months old yet. So I don't want to ignore it, I would like to keep my computer in pristine working order.

    Regards,

    Nic

    Hi Nic,

Need info on what's running -Do this: In this thread http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=36210 in post #4, Newt gives instructions on using tasklist.exe, that will show you what processes and applications are running. Post the results here if you have any questions.

    Regards - Charles

    Hi,

I did what you said, but it didn't work. So I downloaded Tasklist.exe, just incase I didn't already have it and tried again. But it still didn't work.

When I typed the info (tasklist /svc > c:\tasklist.txt) into CMD Prompt, and pressed return, the prompt screen goes blank for a few seconds, then inserts a new line saying.

    What is going wrong?

    Regards,

    Nic

    Hi Nic,

Nothing went wrong - look for the .txt file tasklist.txt on the HD.

Also look at this site on XP shutdown problems http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

Nic99, you seem to have lots of things running that you can possibly do without on a normal boot up.

Go to Start > Run and type in msconfig (press enter) and then click on the "Startup" tab. Untick some or all of those items and test to see if your shutdown problem improves. Many time it's that simple. Once you isolate the offending program or programs, then you should use other means to keep it from starting automatically. Either look within the program or check your "Startup" folder under your logged on identity.

Mine is located at C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

    Substitute your identity if different.

Edit: BTW, as a test you should try booting to Safe Mode and see if you can shut down from there without any problems.

    Hi Nic,

This is HP "stuff ", not sure exactly what its for, I'm almost certain that these are at least one set of processes that's giving you the "can't end" message:

    hpcmpmgr.exe 3084 N/A
    hptskmgr.exe 3636 N/A

This is an example of what needn't run on startup: realsched.exe 3060 N/A This is Realplayer.

    Regards - Charles
