What is your advice on an AV for Win 98SE with 128mB? Not able to afford anything newer. Also, have enjoyed nothing but conflict with Norton; but, if its better I will endure it.

Also, is it necessary or advisable to download critical updates from Microsoft? Every time I have tried in the past, they froze my pc in mid download or caused other problems.

If Norton were working OK for you I'd say keep it since with 9X it should be a good AV. But if it gives problems, get rid of it - AFTER you get something else.

I like the free version of AVG myself. It's what I run.

Critical updates are just that, critical. Post your problem with downloading them to the 98 section because you really need to get this problem solved.

AVG 6.0 free runs fine on 98. I highly recommend it. As you are running a slow(ish) pc, you will find that Norton AV WILL slow down your machine. AVG 6.0 free edition uses far less resources/CPU processing, so you should see a noticeable improvement in system speed.
AVG 7.0 free edition is in beta at the moment and should be released in november. I guess this means a version 8.0 must be in the pipeline for a paid subscription.

How is it for getting new virus updates? Do you have to remember to check for them or does it work the same as Norton?
