Rancher, Rancher, Rancher. I've done as you've recommended and the dang dwwin.exe error message still comes up!!!!! I am so frusterated with this whole problem.
I also have downloaded a while back Wild Tangent updater and the wild tangent web driver. Do I need these and should I try to uninstall them to see if the problem goes away?I'm Just trying to see what else could be causing the error message to come up!!!
Let me know your thoughts about this!
    Thanks,
    Lucy

    Dear Lucy

I have copied here one of your earlier post & will reply!

Rancher, please disregard my previous reply!! I did a search for the files you suggested and this is what it gave me:
    For: system.ini (system, system.ini.backup)
    win.ini (win, win.ini.backup)
and for the other two nothing came up. Do I delete these completely and if so, will it give me different problems in the future, in other words, are these files needed for anything else on my system? Sorry for the ignorance, but I am learning by dealing with you!
    Lucy

You can delete the win.ini.bak & the other .bak's as well. But what I really wanted you to do was look into the "REAL" .ini's like this: "Start/Run" type sysedit [enter] & look in these menus for the referance dwwin & remove it then save/exit

The dwwin is a windows search assistant on my WinXP puter. However does not show as an .exe

Last....When you boot next time, the second you see the message script "error finding dwwin.exe" press the PAUSE key and wright down everything on screen on?

    Hi Rancher,

I've attempted several times on rebooting the system and pressing pause/break the sec I saw the error message, but of course windows continued shutting down and restarting. So this is the error message that I've managed to get during those attempts:
    dwwin.dll initialization failed
dwwin.exe: This application has failed because this station/system is shutting down. I hope this helps a bit!

    dwwin.exe

To the best of my knowledge dwwin.exe is a WINXP file placed into C:\windows\system32 folder !!
The dwwin.dll is grouped into the exe with a number of others ness to fetch whatever the darn thang is 'sposed to! Did you do a windows update & by chance selected a patch or update ment for XP? My wife has dual O/S on her box & there is no dwwin.exe on her win98se! The only other possibel is upgrading your game stuff you downloaded this thang & now stuck with it. Ya can not rename the beast in it's folder coz when I tried to windows just built another issue of exe. I think we can remove this, if we determine the dwwin.exe is trully not needed for your computer, from the dos command...........
your win.ini & sys.ini are not the prob:)

Yes, I go to Windows update quite often to download what they suggest, only because I've been told to do that on occasion. If I delete dwwin.exe will it ***** up something else on my computer? Is it neccessary to have?

    Dear Lucy

 Seems ya have installed directx7.X over winxp's directx8.X. If you do re-install directX8.x make dang sure it's the winxp ver: not 98se ver: This coulda happened too? Do you have a registry cleaner? Download one coz the referance to our prob is coming up via the registry:)

It's quite possible that could of happened during a game installment or other program. What registry cleaner can you suggest I download to clean the registry? Thanks for getting back to me and letting me know. :)

Open the regcleaner. Click "tools ", select "Registry cleanup ", select "automatic registry cleaner" The cleaner will remove what it believes is SAFE only. I do this first, then restart puter, make sure things work ok (mine does) & just maybe this first step will fix the dwwin prob! If not open the regcleaner again & cleck on Help, readme & schroll down to the blue links as these are "live" to web as well. There are the answers & "Examples" for every on of the "TABS" across the top of the program.

IF things don't run correctly (it will) just restart, press F8 & select "Last Known Good Boot" [enter] & you are back with your old registry again.......\\\Rancher///
PS 8" snow here last nite & two baby calves born last 72hrs!! Yep they are in the barn:cool:

Yes we have black angus beef cattle, hence the nickname "Rancher" that got pinned on me back when I was the only one ranching out here in the Chena valley.

I gotta confess this prob of yours has me stumped from my end:(
Maybe if I was in your chair I could figger it out. Seems no one else really has a handle on it either or they woulda jumped in by now. If you re-read our first few post sometimes ya pick things up that NOW ring a bell! The error comes about via diff hardware & software drives + utilities as "Windblinds" did for one & fancy keyboard drivers for another.

You can try setting "Diagnostics Startup" in msconfig this will of couse give you basic startup withouta lota drives, see if that works. Do you have "Normal startup" selected now?

Okay, now it all makes sense to me why your nick name is Rancher!!! lol
This whole thing has me stumped too, and I did go through everything from the beginning but nothing has come up different. I did go to msconfig and my start up method is set at selective start up. Should I change this?

I've tried it but still nothing. I have reformated before when I had windows 98 se, but since I've had windows XP pro installed I haven't had to reformat it yet up until now. I have the XP cd but prior to that I need to insert the 6 start up floppy discs for it and not sure if I know what to do from then on? Any suggestions for that? "Tired and frusterated "!!!!! Oh, and yes I have a cd burner!
