I am having trouble with a fuzzy monitor screen. The Monitor is a 19" flat-screen CRT, made by Samsung. It is a SyncMaster 955DF. Over the past few months it has been flickering, blurry and totally random. However, since it is only a year old I'm inclined to believe it might be a video card problem. This problem mainly occurs when the screen first turns on and fixes itself eventually.

Any ideas? I'm fairly sure it is not a problem with wonky electricity as all the other devices in the house work flawlessly.

    Thanks very much,

Try the monitor on another PC.

Update the graphics card drivers, as this can slightly help with image clarity.

If you can establish that the monitor is faulty then a simple tweak of the internal focus control can sharpen up the image.

    Is it still under warranty?

If not then someone who understands the dangerous voltages inside, can easily tweak the focus control. But you may also have intermittent problems affecting the monitor as you say "totally random ". This points towards either a failing component(s), or a dry joint(s)?

I think I would start with a good cleanout of the computer box.

Blow all the dust, cobwebs, cat hair etc. out of the fans and all.

Unplug the video card and clean the contacts with a pencil eraser and plug it back in.

Boot up with the side cover off and make sure all your fans are running. This stuff needs to be done at least once a year or less according to where you live.

Is the fuzziness like out of focus or is it like color splotches in part of the screen. Some monitors have a degaus function that will clear up the splotches.

No help? Check back in and we can go from there.

Thanks for the help so far. It is not a degauss problem, but I will try to clean the contacts and the case and check back in. It is still under warranty, but who wants to be without a monitor for weeks at a time?

    Over and out,
