I recently went from a PII to a P4. Had 98SE on, transfered all to new HD with the copy program that came from WD. It worked fine. I then put in new hardware.

    Asus P4P800 SE MB
    Evga Nvidia MX 4000 AGP
    2 256mb DDR 2700 ram
    enabled the onboard LAN
    SB 5.1 sound card

98SE had problems with this. LOTS of problems. Was getting DLL, EXE, your name it I got it errors. Updated drivers, no fix.

(side note) I did 90 percent of same upgrade to sons PC and works GREAT.

Anyways, started doing searches for possible fix. I then decided I had to do a complete reinstall. I found this info on a web site.

"If you own Windows 3.1 or Windows 95, you should purchase the Windows 98 SE upgrade version in a retail store for ca. $90. This will allow you to install it on top of a existing version of Windows 3.1 or 95 and upgrade it to 98 SE. If you want to perform a clean install, you can still do that using the 98 SE upgrade CD by running the setup and inserting your old Windows 3.1 or 95 disks when prompted at the beginning of the installation to prove your eligibility to upgrade. "

So this is what I did to save time. MOST of every thing works. However, games hvae problems, some windows software hvae problems, Kernel32 and Krnl386.exe errors most the time.

I also updated from MS site. Still no go.

Im faced with the fact I need to reinstall again.

Do you think what I did may have caused my troubles above with the "fakeing out" windows with out installing any versionn at all?

Reads more like 98SE has problems with Operator errors.

I ask/say this because I have done this myself. I copied an HD ( 40gig to 80gig ) and put the 80gig into an entirely different machine. But the first boot DID NOT to go directly to the HD. It was booted to the Start Up Floppy and a reinstall of Windows was done. In fact that same HD now has XP pro on it.

Before you shut down to change the video card did you remove the OLD from the Device Manager ? Or at least reset it to Standard VGA settings. AND RESTART Windows before shutting down to install the new card ? I did that before copying.

Same with the Audio. Did you remove ( I take it a plugin card ) from the device manager ? And it is also ( I have found ) better to also physically remove it.

    Another question for you.

Did you make all ( or any of ) those changes at the same time ?

If so there well may be ( at least part of ) the problems(s)

But to answer the original question of
    YES If done properly.

The sound card was first the original, should of said that. The video card was a 3Dfx and I know I removed all files for it cause I knew these cards had problems with a up grade.

What Im guessing is, son's and wife's PC, had 95, then 95b, then 98FE, and then 98SE.. all ran 99 percent flawless for years, then upgraded to P4's and still no problems at all. All 3 comps were like this, all had all the updates and patches.

So I take it that all was well until you changed Hardware ?

After you removed those files did you restart Windows and double check ? ( lesson learned the hard way here )

That reads very familiar except this HD started out with 98FE on a 40gig and now has XP Pro on an 80gig. ( and the lack of problems ) And the HD ( or a copy of one ) was taken from an AMD 750 on one MB to this AMD 1.2 and a different MB. But as I mentioned earlier it was not allowed to boot to the HD the first time. ( with 98SE on it ).

And again I ask. Were the changes done all at once or one at a time ?

That is one thing I have found our about Windows ANY VESRION Do not try to make two many changes all at once. I have found that when making several changes it is better to make one at a time and then wait a day or two and allow windows to be restarted several times before making the next change.

Oh BTW. I HOPE you did not make the same BAD mistake that I did with one MB. I did not make sure the power was off before messing with Video card.

Right now money is on a Video Problem.

Pluggin or onboard ? If onbaord was the plugin removed ? At least from the Device manager.

    Added note.

The reinstalls I referred to in an earlier reply were OVERTOP installs not clean.

While I was out on the front porch having a smoke a WILD IDEA popped up.

Could this problem be due to wrong type of ( or bad ) RAM ?

Testing ram was an idea as well, yesterday, I was told it would cost 26 bucks per stick, I have 2.

I am willing to buy different ram, and may still do so. I'll go to Asus, double check specs on ram they suggest.

Could the problem also be related To the ORDER in which things were done.

In the past I have found this to be true.

I myself would think ( note I said THINK ) the proper order would be RAM, Video then sound.

And sometimes it takes several restarts for Windows to get things stttled down correctly.
