    Dear Friends,

I gathered a new PC with the following configuration. I use Windows 98 SE. Although I install Windows again, I see this message when I enter CONTROL PANEL:

    EXPLORER
THIS PROGRAM HAS PERFORMED AN ILLEGAL
OPERATION AND WILL BE SHUT DOWN.

EPLORER caused an invalid page fault in

My first thought is a damaged cpl file. Do a file find for *.cpl. when your list comes click on each individually and see if one of these puppies squacks. If so your going to have to rename it and extract a new one from your win98 CD. First things first, do the file find and check to eliminate this as a possibility since it's quite easy and takes little time.

(make sure you've set your folder options to show "extensions ", "hidden" and possibly "system files ": http://www.cybertechhelp.com/html/tutorials/tutorial.php/id/11 )

A little more time comsuming but:
    Windows 95 and Windows 98
The .cpl files for Windows 95 and Windows 98 are located in the %SystemRoot\System folder.
    1. Create a new folder on your desktop called "temp" (without quotation marks). To do this, right click and empty area on your desktop, point to New, click Folder, and then type temp.
    2. Move all of the .cpl files out of the System32 folder and into the Temp folder that you created.
    3. Verify that Control Panel opens. Note that Control Panel does not contain icons after you move all of the .cpl files out of the System32 folder.
    4. Move the .cpl files back into the System32 folder, one at a time, and then open Control Panel after you move each file to verify that Control Panel opens.
    5. If you move a .cpl file back into the System32 folder, and Control Panel does not open, delete the file, or replace the file with a known, good .cpl file.

    Additional Information
In Windows 98, all of the base Control Panel .cpl files are on your Windows 98 CD-ROM and are located in the compressed Win98_28.cab file.
Win98 se may be a different cab and I'd have to look this up.

If the above doesn't panout or produce joy; See "method two" concerning control.ini:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;299923&Product=w98

If this whole cpl culprit theory doesn't do it, we can then move on to other tools and areas.

    Thank You

    Dear Ann,

Thank you very much for your quick response. Because my non-perfect English, I don't understand "...and see if one of these puppies squacks. "
Can you please make it clear :)

    Then, I'll try at weekend.

    See you soon.

    :) I'm so sorry bormax,

I guess English slang is not a "good thing" in this case. When I said and I quote, "see if one of these puppies squacks ", I mean, "if one of the cpls respond with an error or does not open ", this is a problem cpl and may need to be replaced.

    Puppies equal cpl
cpl equal "control panel applet "
    squacks equal "produces error "

and "stupid me" equals "squacks" should have been "squawks" :)

    bormanx, quick question for you

    Hi.

I read your post and aside from the ram, video card and CPU speed, I have the same system.

    mainboard : ASUS P4P800 SE (i865PE)
(onboard Marvell Gbit LAN : ACTIVATED - onboard audio : DEACTIVATED)
    cpu : INTEL P4 2.4a GHz 478 PIN (BOXED)
    ram : 2 x 256 MB 333 MHz DDR
sound : CREATIVE SOUND BLASTER LIVE 5.1
graphic : Evga GEFORCE MX 4000 128MB Ram

I went from a PII 333 to the above. Win98SE gave me fits due to the hardware change. Did you have any further problems like with hardware? I sitll can't get one of the USB root hub errors out of device maniger

    My problem has been solved

    Dear Ann,

Thank you very much for your help. "Changing/replacing *.cpl files" method has worked for my PC. There had been one bad .cpl file and I changed it with my other PCs .cpl file (PIII via, win98).

    See ya...

    Hi Basstracker,

I witnessed another problem that I saw a yellow-exclamation PCI device in "other devices" section of device manager. I think the problem is the incompatibility between Win98 and USB 2.0 support. In Win98 I cancelled the USB 2.0 support from the BIOS and the problem temporarily disappeared.
But, I plan to install WinXP as dual boot and I hope XP will fully support USB 2.0. Apart from that I didn't see any major problem with my P4 PC.

    Thank you all...
