I have 2 FTP softwares - CuteFTP and SmartFTP.
I have a number of sites I want to upload to.

I have used both FTP softwares and tried all the sites but all it does is, connects and then times out and then waits for another 30 seconds before retrying.
Since it happens to all the sites, I figure there must be a connection problem on my end.

I don't have a firewall and Windows Firewall is not active (the box is not checked).

What can I do to resolve the problem?

secondly, how do I connect to ftp using command.com?

    Appreciate the help,
    JH

Call your ISP. Make sure you have your user name and password entered for each different site- no typos. Since you can't get to any of them, it's probably on the web host's end. I like CuteFTP- great little program, isn't it?

Turn your XP firewall on and/or buy another one (or download a freebie) then run an RAV scan to be sure you don't have other problems. I think ftp is Port 21 by default, but if you're not running a firewall everything is wide open.

Likely an issue with the Hosts. The address http://66.90.73.48 resplvges to jrueimages.com and half trheir pages do not work. Also, you may have to setup your ftp clients to use passive mode.

Worth a shot, only takes a second or two and can be easily reversed:
    http://www.pcbanter.net/showthread.php?t=683240

Link indicates that setting IE's>options>advanced tab setting "use passive FTP" to disabled (unchecked it) fixed FTP problem with all FTP programs he had previous problems with.
