I've just done a clean install of XP Home and reinstalled Tbird. I copied the profiles from my backup. First time did it from memory which wasn't a good idea. So I've done some reinstalling of Tbird.

Now I can open Tbird but not the individual emails. Click on them every which way, get an hour glass but nothing. Suspect it might have to do with the paths that I edited.

Edit: When I Shut Tbird down it continues to show as a running process in task manager. When this happens I cannot open it.

    dscott,

In Thunderbird, go to your Account Settings | Server Settings
Scroll down to the "Local directory" field. Is that the correct path to your Mail Account folder? If not change the path accordingly.

As to Thunderbird remaining in the Task Manager, every now and then I have the same thing, but it is not a frequent happening.

Your Thunderbird Profile should be located here, for Windows XP:
    C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles

Ramona ~ Maybe I'm not picking the right folder level. What might the name of the account folder look like? My path goes to Profiles|*.Scotts|Mail|pop.myisp.com. have another folder just under Profile: *.default but have the prior setup as default.

Path looked like the one you posted but ended on folder beneath Profiles.

I changed to other folders at the same level. When I clicked on Local folders I got this message: "This directory is already in use by another server. Please pick a different directory. "

I have to restart computer every time I open Tbird in order to close Tbird when I want to open it again. I use Quick Launch to open my most oftern used programs. When Tbird is still in task manager there is a "(2)" - without the quotes - after the Tbird icon and label.

I am having a problem accessing the Netscape Solutions site. Please select the third item
You will want to modify the Target path of the shortcut. So, right click on the shortcut, select Properties, and you should see a Target line. If iTB is installed, it will be: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" If you want the default profile, add the name.
    "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -p default or is it: "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Thunderbird\thunderbird.exe" -p *.Scotts
Pick the one that you want to use.

Make sure that you leave a keyboard space after the " and after the p.

    Westside,
Not sure which issue you were addressing (opening individual emails or opening Tbird when it's still in task manager). I made the change but both problems persist.

    dscott,

Here is a Screen Shot of the Thunderbird Profile folder structure. Altho mine will differ, in that I run Windows 98SE, you should be seeing the same structure from Applications Data down... Is this how your Profile folder looks?

So... in the Mail Account Settings | Server Settings my Local directory path would read:
    C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles\9xtoyoyy.merge\Mail\pop.myisp.net
(fake for obvious reasons, changed yours also)

To clarify, you have two Profiles listed:
    *.scotts and *.default - correct?
However, you are using the *.scotts profile, and the local directory setting in Thunderbird is pointing to the <path> \*.scotts\Mail\pop.yourisp.net - correct?

If this is the case, then you should be able to access your Mail. Puzzling indeed... I'm sure that you've checked the folders and the messages are physically in place. Have you tried deleting the MSF files in your mail account folder?

If you aren't using the *.default profile, then move it out of the Thunderbird folder to your Backup folder, for the time being. I'm sure you've created a backup folder, and backup your Profiles frequently. ;)
Could you clarify what you mean by "Local folders ". This is always confusing due to the "Local Folders" contained in the Mail Accounts, and then users referring to the folder in Windows Explorer as "Local Folders ", when trying to help get to the bottom of a problem.

BTW, do you use more than one ISP?

I would advise the disabling of Quick Launch, unless you have an incredibly slow, older, processor. When you close, Netscape, Mozilla, Firefox, or Thunderbird, the programs are still running in the background, and will be listed in Task Manager. See if you still have your problem, once Quick Launch is disabled.

    HTH,

    Ramona

    Thanks, Ramona.

Didn't know that about Quick Launch. I moved the icons to the desktop and activated the desktop tool bar to access them. Desktop tool bar works different than quick launch, right?

After I rebooted, the first time I opened Tbird from the actual desktop (I had gone into properties on the shortcut and removed the "(2)" - it had become part of the name) tbird came up blank - no mail at all. I shut tbird down and restarted it and it came up ok. Still couldn't open individual pieces of email. Shut it down again and it wouldn't restart (tbird still showed in task manager).

I switched layout to show message pane and the Windows BBS message was there and the link live. I opened Firefox using that link but couldn't open emails outside of the message pane.

I archived the other profile as you suggested. Here's my path:
    C:|Documents and settings|Scotts|Application Data|Thunderbird|Profiles|xi767ii4.Scotts|Mail|isp.com

At the last level, under Mail, are two folders, the one mentioned in the path and another called Local Folders (this is the "Local Folders" to which I was referring).

"To clarify, you have two Profiles listed:
    *.scotts and *.default - correct?
However, you are using the *.scotts profile, and the local directory setting in Thunderbird is pointing to the <path> \*.scotts\Mail\pop.yourisp.net - correct? "

When I go to C:program files|Mozilla Thunderbird|Defaults|Profile and look at prefs.js in notebook it is blank, except for some warnings and instructions.

In Mail account seetings|server settings are as you described.

Hope I answered all your questions and addressed all your points and that this feedback helps.

My primary goal is learning so I'm doing allot of that.

    Thanks.

    Scott

    Ramona ~

Just reread your previous post and realized I'd skipped over the MSF files suggestion so went back and deleted all in both folders under Mail folder. No change in either issue.
    Thanks.
