I am unable to download large (greater that 2.5 to 3 Megabytes) from any "web" site. Configuration:
    P-III 450MB
    128 MB Ram
    Windows 98SE
    Internet Explorer 6.0
    Netscape 6.2
Cable Modem (Charter pipeline\High Speed Access Corp.)

The operation always times out after 1 minute 30 seconds to 1 minute 45 seconds (the actual bytes depend on the connection speed I happen to get at that time). I never saw it last 2 minute. All incoming and outgoing packets just stops.

I have tried a number of web sites (TUCOWS. Jumbo, CNet, etc. allways the same).

I have tried Internet Explorer as well as Netscape. The same.

I have Reformated the hard drive and re-installed Windows, I.E., apps, etc. Still the same.

I have used MSCONFIG and shut down all running apps. Same

Here is the kicker. It is only from "web" sites (i.e. http://). I used my FTP application (WS-FTP), went to <ftp.linux.tucows.com> went to the ISO folder and downloaded the complete ISO for Mandrake-8 Linux (over 600 MB). No problems. I did the same in Internet Explorer by entering the above URL in the address bar. No problems when it "shelled" out to ftp. I do not have any problems receiving "large" attachment in e-mail or downloading hundreds of binaries at one time from news groups. It is only from WEB sites.

Any information would be appreciated before I go "rag" on my ISP again. I have e-mailed both Charter Communications (Pipelilne) and High Speed Access Corp. (actual operator of Pipeline). Neither have so much as acknowledged my e-mail.

    Hi Calvin,

I've just upgraded from 98 to 98SE and noticed something similar last night... for all I know it was MS's website. I need to dig into it a bit more, but I'll let ya know if I figure anything out.

    Cheers,

    Hi Calvin,

I've fixed the problem here... just not sure why.

My solution was to uninstall IE6 to return to IE5.5.

Good luck with your problem, hope this helps. If anyone can explain what's changed to cause this, I'd love to know!

    Cheers,

    Bonzai Gopher

    Internet option settings

    hey there,

I dug around a lil' bit and noticed that in IE 5.5 that most Web sites use HTTP Protocol 0 for HTTP downloads. That setting is in Internet options, under the advanced tab. I use the basic version of Realdownload without any problems, it uses a lan connection that in enabled with any browser and I haven't had a problem with HTTP downloads. It is a free version, no frills - but check your settings in Internet Options - your answer may be there.
