W95 running ok but will not see existing cd-rom drive. Drive is enabled and recognised in bios. Drive is recognised in Device manager and shown as working. It does not show up in My Computer as a drive. In the properties the box for assigning drive letters is greyed out and the boxes for assigning range of letters are white and blank...
    Any ideas?
    Cheers
    Iain

Boot the computer in Safe Mode, and remove the CD entries in the Device Manager. Then reboot and let windows start up normally, and the CD should be reinstalled.
Press F5 when you see Starting Windows 95 to be able to choose Safe Mode.

    Thanks but...

Thanks for your response. I tried that fix but got no change at all. Ive since tried putting the HD into other motherboard/cdrom combinations looking for..well anything. The W95 instalation still refuses to assign drive letters to the cdrom.
I tried also to boot from floppy with a view to trying to repair the W95. That went ok but of course the cdrom cannot be found...
I am reluctant to fdisk the lot and start again as the owner wants to keep some of the programs he hasnt discs for etc etc..
I think I'm missing something but cant seem to see a way through
    Thanks again
    Iain

What is your HDD / CD-ROM configuration?

On one of our olders PC's it would not recognize the CD-ROM unless it was the "Primary/Master" on the secondary IDE. It was setup as HDD (Master) and CD-ROM (Slave) on the Primary IDE. After changing to HDD (Master) on Primary IDE and CD-ROM (Master) on Secondary IDE it we could see the CD-ROM.

Note: After flashing the BIOS to the latest we were able to put the configuration back to HDD (MAster) and CD-ROM (Slave) on Primary IDE.

    Thanks again

    Thanks Kent.
I tried that as one of my options. I have had HDD and CD as master/slave on primary IDE and HDD as master on Primary and CD as master on Secondary IDE.
Still with no results. The CD drive is detected in the bios but refuses to show up in W95. I even tried another HDD with a clean W95 and set the problem one up as slave. The clean W95 saw the CD dirve no problem. Switch round then the problem HDD as master and the new HDD as slave and the cD drive is not showing. This is why I assume its something in W95..cant get into it to "repair" and Im not sure what is causing the problem.. driving me nuts!!
    Cheers Iain
