Well, I have a HP with 1.5 Ghz processor and being the kid I am I wanted more processing power so I thought about buying a newer computer. Then I said why not replace my CPU. So I order an Intel P4 2.4 Ghz processor to replace my 1.5 Ghz processor. The cost of the processor was very reasonable and faster than what I had and since everything else in my computer had been upgraded and in good condition I thought why not upgrade the CPU.

Now for the problem. I removed the old fan and processor with no problem. I then put in the new CPU, lock it down and install the heat sink and fan. Turned on the PC to a black screen. There was no sounds from the PC other then the fan running. So I thought maybe I had installed the chip wrong. So I rechecked everything and started up the PC again, still nothing. After an hour or so on a task that should have taken 10 minutes I gave up and said, oh well, I well just put my old CPU back in and worry about the new CPU problem later. Well guess what, when I installed the old CPU I got the same problem, black screen. What could I be doing wrong? I am pretty sure I am putting the chip in the correct way, but I now have a dead PC. Is there something else I need to do to get the CPU's to start up after installing it? Help?????

You need to check your manual before replacing a CPU. There's a limit to what you can upgrade to, depending on the motherboard.

Now, try clearing the CMOS (directions should be in manual, hopefully).

BTW, did you use heat conducting compound between the heat sink and the CPU? It's ablolutely necessary.

I did check my motherboard information before I replaced the CPU. I am also having problems with my fan not wanting to run when I power up. I am not sure at this time if I have a CPU problem or a motherboard problem.

I under the need for heat conducting compound, the fan and heatsink tha I received had a compound on the bottom when I receive it. Nothing was said in the instructions about adding more.

What is strange is that neither of my CPU will work now. I have either burn up both of them or my motherboard as a problem. I was very carful so I don't think I damaged the chips.

There is a tutorial for applying thermal compound and installing the heatsink at www.arcticsilver.com.
If the thermal compound was previously used it should be removed and replaced with a new application.

Hopefully you didnt fry anything from static electricity.

As stated above try clearing the CMOS.
One way to do it is unplug the machine and remove the battery from the motherboard for about 10 min or so.
