    Hey everyone,
A friend gave me his computer. He said that it was giving him errors a while back. The company he bought it from 2 years ago, went under. His consultant at his business told him it was serious and would take a while. He went out and bought a new one. The only thing i could find wrong with it was the Floppy drive. When replacing it i noticed that one of the Capacitors or Diodes "whatever" had fallen off. The cap to it, that is. A small cylinder cap. I can't believe this is a safe thing.
I would like to replace the Motherboard, and need a little help in doing so.

    AMD k62 450MHZ CPU
    On boot up:

    ALAO 327D

    03/27/1999-ALLADIN5-2A5KKBODC-00

    BIOS Screen

    2A55kkBOD

A large chip on the board has this info on it

    M1541 A1
    100mhz
    9912
    XD284560000E
    TAIWAN

I forgot what the case sizes were AT & ATX?

Any help is appreciated, as always.

    Hey everyone,
I'm still in search of a new M/B.
I called compusa and the hardware guy said he couldn't order a generic M/B. He said he could order me a new M/B with a p4 for about $350 + 80 for the ram. Thats nuts!
I can't seem to find one. All i need is a ATX M/B, that will support a AMD K6 11 450 Chip and PC100 Ram.
I used this site to tell if it was an ATX
    http://www.digidesign.com/compato/98mobo.html

    Does anyone have a clue?

    Thanks in advance,

    Hi again Rookie,

Went to wimsbios.com and found that your curent board is mfgr'd by Biostar (Mod# M5ALC). Checked at pricewatch.com and found two websites w/ FIC motherboards with VIA chipsets (MVP3) for $50-$60, pcprogress.com and spartantech.com. One of my favorite sites , computergeeks.com, for this type of part is not showing any Super Socket 7 boards at present. These boards are becoming quite hard to find.

You might try checking the various retailers listed on pricewatch.com selling motherboards. Go to their websites and search for Socket 7 motherboards. You'll not be able to use any w/ Intel chipsets. Look for Ali, VIA, or SIS.

    HTH,
    Tin

If you are using Windows 9x, you'll be able to use the hard drive and everything (including the OS) that's on it on another motherboard (without reloading Windows) IF you can get the Windows cab files on that hard drive or slave a second hard drive with the cab files on it. It's even better if you can include the files for the future drivers.

I learned the trick from another board. On one computer running Windows 98SE, I put the Windows cab files and driver files for the video, audio, and modem I would be using in a second computer. I burned an image to CD.

I took that image CD and loaded it into the second computer. Upon reboot, everything was being reinstalled. You need to have the cab files on a hard drive because at this point Windows doesn't recognize the CD drives.

Anyway, I it to the cab files and drivers as each was being located. After about 5 minutes everything was installed and I rebooted again. My second machine is a clone of the first! Every program and setting!

So, don't worry about changing motherboards. But you do, at a minimum have to be able to direct the setup to cab files, either on the hard drive or a slaved hard drive.

Sounds like you're simply looking for a Socket 7 ATX mainboard. Since I don't think anyone sells them anymore I would try ebay. Beware of talking to people at CompUSA, the one you talked to sounds clueless. The power supply in your machine wouldn't support a P4 anyway.

Keep in mind that you could use this opportunity to upgrade the machine. Fry's (the store) or Newegg.com (online) have dirt-cheap prices on Athlon mainboards and Duron processors. Newegg had a 1Ghz Duron for $39 a couple of weeks ago. If you did go the upgrade route you'd need:
    Athlon-type mainboard
    Duron/Athlon cpu
    300-400W ATX Power Supply
    A stick of DDR memory
Decent CPU Heatsink (if you buy the cpu OEM)

Or like I said above, just hunt down a Socket 7 ATX mainboard and you should be set.

You can find some Socket 7 boards at www.pricewatch.com. I just ordered and received an Amptron Socket 7 board. Don't be afraid of this brand. It may not get into the speed demon's book of records; but, it has been my experience they are reliable.

So far, I have used almost twenty of this brand board and haven't gotten a bad one yet, neither have I had one returned.

Go to www.amptron.com and see what is available in Socket 7. Then go to www.pricewatch.com and do a search in the Amptron brand for that model number.

    Thanks everyone, for your responces.

I followed all your links. When i followed Ranchers. I found the following link to a motherboard, which looks almost exactly like the one i have.

    http://www.softwareandstuff.com/h_mb_asusp5a.html

The only difference is. The M/B for sale has 5 PCI slots.
Making the total number of card available 8.
The M/B i have only has 4 PCI slots for a total of 7.
The case only has 7 openings for Cards.

Will the new M/B fit in the case, and is it what i need with the given info i have written here?

The Dead M/B in the same line as the new has
    2 ISA
    4 PCI
    1 AGP

    The new M/B has
    2 ISA
    5 PCI
    1 AGP

    Thanks a Ton,
    Rookie

www.softwareandstuff.com is a good steer from The Rancher! www.compgeeks.com is also a good place to look, but they are in and out of inventory quite often so you have to keep checking. Anything on their site is in stock- real time updating.

    Thanks everyone so much,
I called and the tech told me that the board will support my chip.

:D I must add that amazingly enough, i had to leave a message on a voice mail and they called me back about 20 minutes later. :D

I was about to give up, when once again the kind & wise people on this board came through.

    Thanks again,
    Rookie

This, directly from softwareandstuff website on the MB you have referenced:

    "- Intel Pentium® Processor P55C/P54C/P54CS 90MHz-233MHz (66Mhz).
    - Cryix M IITM 300MHz ~ 333MHz , 6x86MXTM PR166+ ~ PR266+
    - AMD-K6® -2, AMD-K6® 233MHz ~ 350MHz "

I too, order from this site quite often and they are very good - never had a bad transaction. Understand however, once you buy it, its yours, unless its defective.

I thought your AMD K6-2 cpu was bigger than 350mhz.

    Your call.
    ;)
