"Limited or no connectivity" using wireless connection

    I am running into the same connectivity issue as person using wired connection with linksys router except i am using a wireless G linksys router. Everything was working fine up until today. I installed sp2 the other day and everything was working fine after a reboot. I had to buy a linksys range extender for my room since i was getting a very low signal, and that worked fine as well. Cordless telephone frequently disturbs connection but that is remedied by switching channel on the phone. To make a long story short, I have tried repairing the connection using the built in process on XP, but it gets to the renewing IP address step and then says it cannot be renewed. Does anyone have any ideas? My AIM name is ssxmetro so if anyone has a clue you can reach me on there. Thanks in advance.

    I'm having the exact same problem. I wrote in the other day when neither of them would connect. I called Comcast, they had me reset the modem and router in a specific order and it fixed the problem. Like an idiot, I again tried to set up encryption on my network and both of them stopped working. Now, after resetting like the rep at Comcast did, I can get my laptop that is wired to the router to connect no problem. But the wireless laptop is not getting assigned an IP and gets the same error message mentioned above, when trying to do a release/renew. Is there some trick to resetting the router??

    I usually reset mine by pulling the power plug, counting 10, replacing the power plug.

    One thing you need to do is check the router maker's web site for any firmware updates and load the latest one you can find.

    Ok, well it gets even more interesting. I went home last night and after just starting from the basics here's what is happening. My wired laptop is still connecting, it will even connect if I stick the wireless card in. My wireless laptop is connecting w. a cat5 cable. It WILL connect wirelessly but only if I boot up in safe mode. Ever since I re-installed the drivers for my wireless card, windows crashes shortly after the desktop appears. It gives me a blue screen and says it's doing a memory dump, and something about IRQL. It doesn't do this if the wireless card is removed when booting up. D-link told me there was something wrong w. my bios and chipset. Ever since having installed sp2, I notice when installing the drivers for the card a message pops up saying these drivers aren't verified by windows and may cause system problems. What the heck is going on?!?!?

    Well, the exact, entire error message you get with the BSOD would help quite a bit. Right-click My Computer then left-click properties and click the Startup & Recovery button then:

    the exact message it's giving me on the memory dump is:

    driver_irql_not_less_or_equal

    I've narrowed it down to think it is something to do w. the drivers. I don't understand why all of a sudden this problem occurs. They're the same drivers as the PC was using when it was working before!! I checked the settings you told me to. The automatic restart box wasn't checked.

    There should be a bunch of numbers on the same blue screen as that error. They may give enough information to track down the specific driver (and I agree that is the most likely culprit). Otherwise you may have to use the instructions Joe Hobart put together Here to create a dump file you can post.

    The only other option is to disable all possible hardware, update/replace your video drivers, and just try things until something makes it break.

    Ok, here's what the blue screen says:

    Everything else on the screen is just kind of explaining what's going on and what it might be. Does anyone have any idea what these numbers mean?? It might as well be Korean to me as I have no clue....thanks!!!

    STOP: = an error serious enough your PC couldn't continue to run

    0x000000D1 = from Here "The Stop 0xD1 message indicates that the system attempted to access pageable memory using a kernel process IRQL that was too high. Drivers that have used improper addresses typically cause this error." The remaining numbers are giving additional information but nothing really helpful to us right this minute.

    CW10.sys - usually pointing to a problem with a wireless NIC and very often Linksys but I've seen references to D-Link and NetGear trying to use the same file.

    Get fresh drivers from the company for your card and a firmware update for the router if there is one available.
    - load the firmware update if any
    - boot to safe mode and remove the network card from device manager
    - reboot and if you are given a chance, force the card to load using your new drivers.

    It should work after the above. As to why it broke - good question.
