98 - will need to have a user account logging on.

XP will either need the Guest account enabled (it is by default at XP-home install and is not by default at XP-pro install) or to have a user account added that matches the 98 logon (somewhat more secure from outside attacks).

    Best practice is to have
    - guest disabled
    - both PCs requiring a passworded logon
    - logon account(s) & password(s) added to users on XP

Note that if you wish, you can have the exact same logon for both PCs and in that case, no need to add additional accounts to XP.

    Assuming that
    - XP has both client for microsoft networks and file & printer sharing installed
    - XP has a folder or printer or both shared
    - XP & 98 are in the same workgroup
    - 98 is requiring a logon name and non-blank password
    - XP has either that account in it's local accounts or the guest account enabled

then things should be working for you. Need more information at this point.

    - IP address and subnet mask from XP and one of the 98 PCs
    - which flavor of XP you have, pro or home

Try this on the XP machine:

Go to either My computer or Windows Explorer

    Choose Tools-Folder Options

    Go to the View tab

Scroll to the bottom of the list and take the tick out of Enable Simple File Sharing.

    Apply. Close the window.

Go to the folder you are sharing on the XP PC

Right click, choose Sharing and Security

Share the folder and click the Permissions button

    Hit the Add button

Type the name of the account the win 98 PC is using to log into the XP machine, then OK. If this step doesnt work you havent set up the account for the 98 machine correctly, please advise.

When returned to the Sharing tab/window, make sure all permissions are ticked to Allow in the list below, with the win 98's account selected in the top pane.

    This helps sometimes.

Also see my forum on Win XP SP2 networking bug fix to patch the XP machine, which may be affected by an SP2 bug thats stuff up networking.

    Hope this helps!

I won't go into details but your post saved my bacon. Disable simple file sharing. Thank you so much.
