I am running a Dell PIII 1.0 ghz with 256 mb RAM, 16 mb ATI rage pro video card, creativeaudio soundcard, and a 3com etherlink 10/100 ethernet card. I am on a college network without a firewall. When I start my computer, it boots fairly normally up until it reaches the point where has the desktop and the cursor appears, and it begins "applying security policy." It spends 15-17 minutes on this step, and then finishes booting up so that I can login, which also happens normally. Any ideas?

Do you logon to a domain? If so, check with the network admin. They can check if DNS is properly configured or remove/re-add the workstation account. Re-applying the latest SP may help.

If you have local admin access, you can try disabling "Local Computer Policy" settings (in properties) using Start > Run... > gpedit.msc

    Hi Unixfan,

I also had this problem with all my PC's at work.

Our setup is a LAN using some 10 base T 8 Port hubs and a couple of 10/100 24's.

All the PC's where taking ages to boot up, so I had to lower the Media Type in the Net cards config from Hardware Default (Which was 100mb) to 10 base Tx and they seemed to go ok after that.

I did also find that the LAN hadn't been setup correctly and was causing loads of conflicts and there was also a broken hub...that might have caused some probs too! :D

This probably won't help, but I'll post it anyway!
