    Hi all

    I'm unsure where to put this, admin please move if appropriate, starting here as I think it's the OS which has been upset but???

    98SE 2222A : P3 600MHz : TPF2.1.5 : CA eTrust EZ Antivirus 6.3.0.9 / 8643 (is current) : Realtek RTL8139 ethernet card : 56k PCI modem

    A few hours ago I "woke up" a PCI ethernet card by installing its driver - the card seems to work OK, it talks to another PC via crossover cable, sees the files OK

    (the card was already fitted but driver not installed)

    trying to reboot to finish the driver install, the PC froze.

    Upon reboot the AV refused, saying there was trouble with LSP configuration picture

    following the suggestions I disabled the email protection, booted OK(ish), and afterwards found that I could re-enable the email protection without getting the same screens... (was thinking I'd have to uninstall then reinstall the AV but it seemed to cure itself next time round)

    however, now when I try Autodownload, things are not the way they should be.

    beforehand: if defs were up to date it produces an alert box to let me know.

    since:

    a) no alert box, the Autodownload window vanishes. I won't know whether it's working OK until new defs come out... this is fairly reproducible

    b) (once only) tried to Autodownload (it's my normal way of going on line) and nothing happened. So I tried again only to get a message that Autodownload was already running, and couldn't run twice at the same time. ?not running properly or ?running but off the screen somewhere perhaps

    (many settings like window size and position got scrambled)

    if I'm already on line and try Autodownload it works OK, like it always did.

    ==

    other things are wrong, too, since:

    Right-clicking on system tray icons to raise their menu: the menu should be on top of the task bar; now it's 50:50 whether the menu's on top or under the taskbar - not reproducible, seems random.

    and perhaps more - the computer's now behaving quite randomly. No BSODs but lots of freezes.

    ==

    I've run Adaware, Spybot (the resident part was active throughout), HJT, all bang up to date, found nothing serious.

    Could try reinstalling the AV but as it works OK if the computer's already online it doesn't seem the right way to go.

    all rather puzzling - I suspect this should maybe over in Networks?

    any advice appreciated

    best wishes, HJ.

    looks like autodownload is indeed rendered u/s

    Hi again

    re: Autodownload not producing the OK box...

    ...having looked at the firewall screen it looks as though Autodownload is not functioning (if it has to invoke DUN to make initial internet connection) because firewall shows no bytes received

    if internet connection already there it receives ~350 bytes telling it the current update version number, so that it can work out whether it needs new defs.

    looks like I'd probably better email CA

    best wishes, HJ

    It is your Kerio firewall that is giving you fits. I have seen that error message before, try uninstalling it. Would this happen to be version 2.1.5?

    Hi Mark

    indeed it is Kerio v2.1.5; is this a known issue then? And if so, what would you suggest for a rules-based replacement, pls?

    that's a bit of a shame, I've got rather fond of that firewall.

    oops - I've just discovered that TPF and Kerio Personal Firewall are two different products - had thought it was two names for the same thing :eek:

    ==

    Having got the PC back to some semblance of normality (!) I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the AV, no change.

    So I've reverted to the earlier version of EZAV (6.1.7.0); this version doesn't have the email checking (no great loss, am Mailwashing) and the update works a different way; the earlier version is better for my purposes anyway.
    No problems with the earlier version whether or not the internet connection is already established.

    thanks and best wishes, HJ.

    I am not sure of the reason why this version of Kerio does this. I believe it has to do with the condition of the freeware license not to use it on a network. Then again, I have seen it go without a hitch.
    I have installed it on a 98 computer with a network up and running and received that very same error message upon windows startup. Shame too, I like this firewall.
    http://soho.sygate.com/default.htm
    Sygate has a free firewall, although it has a larger footprint than Kerio. It will monitor all DLL files that are accessing the internet, if you let it. I have used it, and the best way to describe it is that Sygate gets as complicated as you want it to be.

    Hi Mark

    thanks for your reply and suggestion of Sygate; I tried Kerio4 :(

    ==

    CA have replied, I'm sending them some debug information, will let you know if anything interesting results.

    ==

    I'll try Sygate on the P3 where the footprint isn't so important
    fine by me as long as those bits can be turned off! (at least to start with). And seeing internet access per-DLL sounds interesting.

    away for some days travelling but will surely post back with what happens.

    best wishes, HJ.
