It seems unsafe, but many programs tell one to disable firewalls and
    av before downloading.

Sometimes I can't get a download to work unless I do.

    Hello Richard,

Never ran into that. Did have problems if by accident or design blocked with the firewall. But an AV, never - unless you mean e-mail attatchments.

If a site asked me to shut either of those defenses down, I would refuse and get what I wanted somewhere else unless I knew for sure that there was a very specific reason to do that.

    Could you give an example.

One more question, are you running ZA Pro?

    Regards - Charles

Do you mean downloading, or installing?
Never seen it before a download, but many times before an install. I never bother to disable AV before an install, and haven't had a problem despite the warning.

I meet Paul and charlesvar half way. I never disable firewall or AV when downloading. (There are some sites where the firewall could be a problem, but I fortunately have not found them.) But I do disable the AV when installing.

I downloaded Adobe Reader 6.01 3 times today from the Acrobat site.
Each time I tried to install it, error message said there was an error
    in downloading.

The 4th time I disabled AV and ZA(Free) and used the the Adobe download manager. It worked. Perhaps the download manager did it, I don't know.
