You may get a message "Limited or No Connectivity" on your LAN connection and you may not be able to network since SP2 came into your PC. I have found the right fixes for this problem and packaged them. You can download the package by going to this web page

    http://users.tpg.com.au/adsl5muj/index.htm

I spent hours sorting this problem out as i had many clients with this problem, which is sure to become widespread. This package worked in ALL cases i tried it on.

    Hope this helps u!
    Dez :)

Bradley - Thank you for this information. I am one of those affected by this Bug.Tried everything and finally removed SP2 from the Client PC. Now that you have provided this fix I'm going to start again, use the fix and trust it will work.

    Again, Thanks.

Bradley - I reinstalled the SP2 in Client PC, applied the KB Fix and made the registry change. Proud to say all is well and the fix made ICS as it was before SP2. Again my Thanks for the solution.

Mudd - outstanding that you are fixed.

Dez Bradley - first off, welcome to you and what a way to start. Simple and very elegant fix that obviously works.

Would you be willing to take time to give a little detail about how/why SP2 is doing this to some systems and how your 'fix' works? I'd love to get a better idea on this one.

    If still not fixed

I havent had any instances of people having the problem after patching the PC yet, so i guess if it still has same errors you have one of these problems:

    > Your network card is faulty or needs updated drivers
    > Your network or DSL router has bad settings or a problem. Also try resetting it (Turn power off for a minute)
    > You have set a static IP in your PC AND have DHCP on in the router
    > Your firewall, software or in the router, is blocking something you dont want it to. That is for another forum.
    > Your ISP has some kind of block on ICS (internet connection sharing) in the router.

    Things to try:

:) Check your network card is working correctly, look in Device Manager (Control Panel-System-hardware). Look for the dreaded !
:) Restart the whole network including routers, from power off.
:) If you have stated a static IP in your LAN connection TCP/IP area, try changin it to auto.
:) Check on my page that is linked in this thread above, nwo and then and see if i experience any different cases of this bug, which i must fix, its my job!

I have posted this advice at a few other bbs as well and 300 or more a day are downloading the patch kit. It is working for most people. For those few it doesnt, obviously they have another problem that isnt as common, maybe in the hardware or software. Or may have a secondary problem to this one.

Look here for more details about the MS KB part of my fix kit.

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;884020

The Microsoft KB patch only addresses that problem. But the problem has 2 parts. Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) also has a problem. If this problem was a virus it would be called a "Blended Threat ". lol.

The other patch, not provided by MS, is a reg entry file, and is an IPSec registry setting. This problem mainly affects people with PPPoE internet connections, that commonly use L2TP components. What it does is return ICS functionaility to SP1 defaults. It fixes the ICS problem.

Read here for more info on the reg fix

    http://news.zdnet.com/2100-1009_22-5321783.html

I am sure Microsoft will release an updated patch in time that will incorporate the 2 fixes i have provided in one file. Many may get it by Auto Update and never know they had the problem.

    Hope i helped!
    :)

Hi I've tried all your suggestions, but I still have the problem with this "limited or no connectivity" It's very frusturating....I just have one question, do I need your program installed on the computers I'm networked to, or just the host? Thanks

Any PCs with XP SP2 installed bada.

Try these things to isolate your problem, which is may be caused by something else other than the bug i have fixed.

Try unplugging your router (any router eg your DSL connection) and see if you can network between the PCs. That may be a problem if you are using a combo broadband router/switch as your network hub. That will require further help.
    Let me know.

If you can try a known to be working network card in any affected machines, to see if it is the network card.

Get the latest drivers for your network card from the manufacturers website.

I assume you have the correct cat 5 cables. Check thier connections.

If you have static ips in the machines try automatic ip, if you have it on auto, try making them static.

If you can remove SP2 do so and see if your problem goes, to see if it is a SP2 problem you are having.

Of course no patch fixes all PCs with the same symptoms, as it could be other problems causing it, but the problem i have dealt with many times is fixed by this patch. Yes computers are frustrating, try doing it for a living! Its fun fun fun haha.

I installed the fix for SP2 but still had problems, I have since found that it ws my firewall "Zonealarm" I had to tell zonealarm to allow conections from the other computer.
    Thanks for the fix

I have received a pretty good response from people about this fix, and it seems to fix most people's problem. I posted this fix on many BBS boards and a few search engines. Until today i had my email address on the web page too and got many emails about this.

So from the responses, i can now report on the feedback i am getting and it may help some people. Here's a few facts then:

    >>The people it will most likely work for are people who had no networking problems until they put SP2 on thier PC.
    >>The number one other cause of this error for people that the fix hasnt worked for was firewall software, and Zonealarm seems to be the most common problem maker. As a tech i hate Zonealarm as it is cumbersome and can slow down your PC a lot when installed. I suggest Nortons Internet Security which incorporates Antivirus, Firewall, Adware blocking and SPAM control. But it isnt free like ZA. You get what you pay for.

On the web page my link refers to at the top of this thread, i have added a section of possible others causes and other things to try if this fix doesnt rectify your problem. Some people have cured thier problems from this extra info, when the patch didnt work for them. I add to this info when new info comes to light.

    Good Luck! :)

encryption and sp2 trigger limited or no connectivity

I have this on two sp2 networks with WRT54G wireless routers, wired is fine, wireless gets this issue, only when encryption wpa or wep is on. Put on your fix, still same problem. XP Pro sp2. So, I am stuck with MAC filtering, any advice. I did several power on/offs. Turned off firewall. As soon as I turn on encryption I get the problem.

Any suggestions and has anyone else run into this.

I'm using HEX for my encrytion. Non of my wireless hardware is the same brand. If they aren't coming out the same on the router and nic maybe upgrade firmware and nic drivers. This has worked for some people. MAC filtering is good. I do that also.

addition info on no connection with encryption and sp2

If I turn encryption off it works fine, both ends are linksys, I upgraded drivers and the router software, still does not work, if I assign ip manually still does not work. Turning off firewall has no effect. I just tried with an sp1 machine works fine. So I am fairly certain that it is related to sp2. As both networks worked fine with sp1. I applied your fixes, still does not work. Thanks for the effort. I will keep following up here.
