a freind of mine re-installed windows 2000 lately, and it functioned perfectly, till one day, she decided to install norton 2003.

the installing process of norton was not very smooth, it seemed to take forever to updating the system, showing that the updating process would be completed in 6 secs.

Finally, norton was successfully installed anyway. but windows became extremely slow. It often took minutes to get a response to a mouse click in the start menu. and the task bar at the bottom was ofen locked so that i could switch the windows or programs only through "Alt+Tab ".

then she decided to uninstall norton. After another extremely long waiting, norton is out, and the speed is back.

    Can you explain why?

    thanks pals.

    Hello lbfatcat!

Have You asked Symantec Support ...... :) ...... well, if You haven't ...... ...... don't bother because they wouldn't have an explanation anyway.

It seems like there is a random performance generator in Norton. On some systems (most?) it works well but on other systems (a few?) it is a disaster.

I have installed Norton from the 2001 vintage up to the 2003 vintage and never had a problem. There is a speed impact on low-end systems (500MHz - 256MB) but on my own system (1GHz - 512MB), I don't notice any speed impact at all.

Even my system is rather low-end-ish and the fact that Norton works well on it, indicates that any system with specs above mine, should be fine.

I have NSW2003 and NIS2003 but the only components running are AntiVirus, FireWall and Norton Protection for the standard Recycle Bin. All other "utilities" have been set to not run in the background. I start them manually when I want to use them.

If "the whole package" was set to run in the background, then I would expect a bigger performance impact but the only item that I have to change in a fresh installation is the Norton Protected Recycle Bin, which goes back to standard Recycle Bin. No other "utilites" are, by default, set to run in the background.

The only explanation I can think of is that Norton doesn't mix well with certain hardware/software combinations.

It is better to install Norton directly after XP, and immediately before going online, for updates. You must run Live Update several times, sometimes rebooting, until it won't offer you any more updates. You did not mention if your friend was replacing another internet security program, or if this was the first one she had. If Norton needed to replace something, was the original IS software completely uninstalled? Was the comp then scanned online to be certain it was clean? (Many "problems" attack security software, and that could have been the reason for the slowdown.)

Norton is a hog, but on most newer systems, you'd never notice. I am guessing that there is more going on "under the hood" in her computer, and that Norton just complicated things. Try running her computer through an RAV scan, and Spybot & AdAware, clean up anything you find, then go offline, set a manual System Restore point, and install Norton, again. Go online, update it and see how Windows flies.

I'll be interested to find out if it is successful, or not.
