I am trying to figure out if when I do a complete backup of the c:\ drive, does the backup also back up the standard Recycle Bin (I use Norton System Works). I don't want to waste the time backing the RB up but I can't seem to find the bin on a directory tree or locate a path to answer my question. Can anyone help?

    thanks,

The name of what You are looking for depends on the file system. The folder resides in the root of each partition. On NTFS the name is RECYCLER, on FAT32 the name is Recycle Bin.

    On NTFS - C:\RECYCLER
    On FAT32 - C:\Recycle Bin
(C: can be any drive letter depending on Your partitions.)

As I understand it, these folders get backed up too. If You empty the Recycle Bin, it shrinks to 85 bytes and is not a (big) problem. If You use Norton Protection, don't forget to Purge Protected Files. Otherwise, several hundred files may be unneccesarily backed up.

Thanks, Christer. The problem is that Recycler shows up in the C directory tree thought Explorer tho in a definitely lighter color. However, if I look at the files in MyBackUp C directory there is No Recycler folder so I can't choose to Not back it up (which I don't need). Any other ideas?

The lighter color is indicating that the folder has the attribute "hidden" and Windows Explorer is set to show hidden files on Your computer.

Which program do You use for backing up?

I use Norton Ghost and it includes RECYCLER in the image but if it is cleared prior to creating an image, it is not much of a problem.
