I have several applications loaded that regularly advise me of updates.

Most of the time I'll accept them ... except in cases where there's a price for the newer version.
MusicMatch recently came out with a new version (which I don't want) and everytime I launch it
or close it down, I'm prompted to upgrade.
I consider this to be nothing more than just another annoying popup window.

Is there any way to sever the tie between me and MusicMatch so that I can use it strictly as a
standalone product - without any of the interactive web features. I don't want any communication
    between me and them.
I just want to use the product as is and have them quit bugging me.

Anybody else have this problem with any app you're running ?

In MM click options>settings. On the general tab, uncheck the line that says "periodically check for updated versions of MusicmMatch" and also the line that says "upload user preference information based on......" . Then click on the CD lookup/connectivity tab. Uncheck the lines that say "enable CD lookup service ", "prompt to submit CD information when not found" and then put a check mark in the box next to "disable internet connection check ". Hopefully that should do it for you.

Should be in your option settings for Music Match:

AUTOMATIC UPDATES - To review or change your status in having Musicmatch automatically check for software updates, click Options>Settings>General (tab) then check or uncheck the box with "Periodically check for updated versions of Musicmatch."

    ========
While reading this from Music Match, I found #6 interesting:
    6. WHEN AND HOW MUSICMATCH INTERACTS WITH YOUR COMPUTER

CONNECTING TO THE MUSICMATCH SERVERS THROUGH HTML EMAIL - Musicmatch obtains information on your IP address when HTML emails are read. This response does not include personal identifiable information, such as name, email or physical address. Reading rich-text or HTML emails results in the same activity as visiting a Website, i.e. the company knows you have visited the site or opened the email, but does not have any personal information.
CONNECTING TO THE INTERNET WHEN YOUR COMPUTER IS OFFLINE OR YOU ARE NOT USING YOUR COMPUTER - Musicmatch includes HTML content in its email newsletters, which will continually refresh through a live Internet connection. If your email client can handle HTML email, then your email client will attempt to retrieve the images that appear in our HTML newsletter. If your computer is connected to the Web, then the email client retrieves the images from the Musicmatch Web servers. If your computer is not connected to the Web and you have your computer set up to automatically dial-up when a Web resource is requested, then an automatic dial-up occurs. Through this activity, Musicmatch is connecting with the server to refresh the HTML newsletter content only, and not collecting any information from your computer. If you wish to avoid this email connection, change your Internet settings so that your computer does not auto-connect to the Web.

To deactivate the Internet auto-connect in Windows:
    Click the 'Start' button
    Select 'Settings/Control Panel'
    Open 'Internet Settings'
    Click the 'Connections' tab
    Select 'Never dial a connection'
    Click 'OK'

You may want to give this a good read:

At the very least read #13:

    thanks Zander , goddez

I had previously changed all of these settings, but I still continue to get the popups for the upgrade.

    I'll keep playing with it.

Are either of you using MM and if so which version ?

    follow up ...

I turned off my DSL modem and rebooted my computer and started MusicMatch, and then exited it ... at which point I got the popup for the upgrade.
So it looks like the advertisement is built into the newer version - 9.0, and has nothing to do with an internet connection.

    I suspected as much.

Are you using the free version or the registered version? I have the registered version and never get bothered about updates. I don't remember if it bothered me before I registered it or not. If you have the free one, it's quite possible it may be something you have to put up with. Now that I think about it, my daughter has the free version and when you open that, she always gets the offer to upgrade. I don't think it's anything coming from their servers though. It seems to be more the type of thing (as you said) that's built into the program. Guess I'll have to take a look at it the next time she's home. Sorry I can't help more.

Zander, I had Version 8.2 Plus (registered) originally.
I upgraded to 9.0 thinking I would be able to keep the Plus features.
But that turned out not to be the case.

Like you say ... it's just something I'll have to put up with.

That's more than likely what happened. I have version 8.20.0130. I remembered when I upgraded to it from the previous version, I had to pay for it. When I first installed it and found out, I uninstalled it and reinstalled my old version. They really don't make this very clear at the time you install the update. Seems kind of deceitful. I eventually did purchase the upgrade though because I use some of the internet features and they no longer worked with the older version. That too seems like sort of a sneaky way of forcing you to upgrade. I thought about dumping it out of spite but decided I'd be a chump. I like the program and that's just what they were counting on. :)

Hi all, I have version 7.1 of MMJB and would not dream of upating it.
Plays well - with DFX plugin too - never calls home and easy to use.
What is often offered as an "update" on these big sellers very often does
not increase your enjoyment but it is meant to coax some cash out of you.
    regards

Annoying Musicmatch tries to get you to upgrade

I like the MusicMatch software a lot, but the company has annoying hawkish ways of trying to get you to upgrade, as some of other commenters already noted. I had trouble recently when I had lost my original version 8 install files (through a hard drive upgrade) and tried to contact the company to re-download those files so I could get my MusicMatch back up and running, which I had paid for. I still had my original license and registration key, and I think by rights they should have provided me with the version 8 install files (basically the same as the free version) even though the latest version was now version 9. Well, I couldn't find any links to older versions on their site (I looked pretty well everywhere) and they didn't respond to any of my emails. So basically they wanted to force me to upgrade, even though I still had a valid version 8 license which I had paid for.

Eventually I figured out a work-around - it was just after version 9 was released, and I discovered that the current versions in foreign languages were still at 8. I speak German, so I went to a German download site, got the German version 8 free version, installed it, entered my registration key - and hey presto, I was back in business, albeit in German.

Since then I installed an upgrade from version 8.1 to 8.2 in English, and now my program's language has reverted to English, too! (That was pretty surprising, that that little trick worked to get my language back to English _and_ upgrade the software.)

Just a note to add - I wonder how many people have been burned by Musicmatch by getting the update messages on a PAID version of their software, downloading the update only to discover that their PAID (premium) functionality has now disappeared without any warning from MusicMatch that this will happen because their registration is valid only for the current version, and then discovered that they can't reinstall their older PAID version of their software because they deleted it ages ago and Musicmatch won't respond to their emails requesting a new download (their legal right to have, I would have thought) and they can't find it anywhere on the site? It's a really sneaky thing for MusicMatch to work like this.
