explorer.exe which version?

Using win98SE, why is the version in the VCM folder newer than the version in the Windows folder? The version number in windows is 4.72.3110.1. The version in the VCM folder is 4.72.3612.1700. What is the purpose of the VCM folder?

Hi Marv...

VCM is Version Conflict Manager ....apparently, Windows detected the differing version numbers ....on my 98se machine, it is 4.72.3110.1.

Those files were put there when you did an overlay install of windows. It is possible that version was part of a IE 5.01 installation on the previous windows installation.

 

Thanks Triger and Markp62, installed 98SE over 98FE recently, was wondering if I should be using newer version in the VCM folder since it appears to be newer.

I just noticed this.

I believe IE would involve IEXPLORER.EXE not EXPLORER.EXE.

The two are quite often confused,

I just checked on myself. I have XP but I believe it is the same in this case.

I opened TaskManager. EXPLORER.EXE is always running.

IEXPLORER.EXE went on and off with the Internet.

Billy Bob, you are correct, I'm always trying to fix it even if it is not broken. In this case I will leave well enough along.

For what it's worth, I did a little checking on this and as it turns out ...

Version 4.72.3110.1 ____ships with Wondows 98

Version 4.72.3612.1700 __ships with IE6.0 SP1 (and various and sunder other things such as Microsoft Office etc )

One mystery I have not resolved is why it does not always install...???

Interesting! I did install Win98SE over Win98FE after Installing IE6.0 SP1, maybe it reverted back to the Win98 version. Since it works most of the time I will leave it along. It sometimes hangs up when I am using explorer.exe to view and move files from one drive to another, especially when it is a lot of files at one time.

Version 4.72.3110.1 Is what I have on my 98SE machine. There is no file of that name in the VCM folder. 98SE is using IE 6.0.2800.1106.

I do not even have a VCM Folder on this machine. It has XP Pro over top of 98SE. And has version 6.0.2900.2180 of the file.

Maybe Windows is smarter at times than we give it credit for.

It could very well be ( or more than likely is ) that it has to match ( be compatable with ) many other OS file.

At one time I also had that problem but I illiminated it YEARS AGO by switiching to PowerDesk by VCOM. It is much easier to handle and MUCH easier to set up Dual Panes for draging and droping files. And I have not ( as yet ) had a problem when selecting mutiple files to transfer.

I have also had the hangup if I used Explorer ( as a test only ) to transfer files in XP Pro.

You can find version 4.72.3612.1700 of Explorer.Exe listed in the contents of the Ie4shl95.cab file. How this version was installed could be answered by this.

Apparently with 98Fe, the exlorer.exe file gets updated, while with 98Se, it does not.
Explorer will hang when deleting or moving large amounts of files. My personal work around is to use Xxcopy, in a dos window.

A better workaround ( at least I think ) is PowerDesk by Vcom.

No need to go to DOS. Just start PowerDesk. Set it for a Two pane vertical view. Select a list of files in one folder and just drag and drop them to another. They can be on the same drive or any other drive. Even a CDRW.

And never leave Winodws to do it. Upr until just a fews days ago I was using the same version that I used WAY, WAY back in Win95.
