I've just installed a new tower for a friend of mine and I can't get the printer to work. The tower is working on the Windows 2000 operating system and she has a HP LaserJet 6L printer and it just won't print.

The problems seems to be that the two machines are not communicating. I have tried deleting and installing and getting new drivers of the net and nothing seems to help. The document looks like it's printing and it sits in quening. The printer works if you press the button the printer you get the printer information printed but can't get a test page or another printed from the computer programs.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

A Laserjet 1000 at work on W2K ocasionally does this. I usually fix it by unplugging the printer power for 10 or 20 secs.

Have you also tried removing it from the device manager and reboot the PC letting it redetect and install the printer again?

    Hi Anne,
If this is a USB connection, make sure it's the only peripheral on the USB bus. Sounds like it needs more bandwidth.

Check BIOS under printer and set it to:
    Parallel Port Mode:ECP+EPP

Otherwise check printer manual for preference and also set DMA if available.
    Mine is set to 3.

My friend that is an IT professional is now looking at the problem because nothing seems to be working. He seems to have discovered the problem - it seems that this printer will only work with Windows 98 but not XP or 2000. He has tested on numerous other machines and that is how he found this out.

Problem is the printer is a good printer and he can't seem to figure out if there is any way at all to make it work with XP or 2000.

Has anyone else ever had this or similiar issue or suggestions. It's driving us both crazy.

    Thanks.

Strange! May be a matter of drivers. Check mfgr's web site for updated drivers.

Apparently the printer port is damaged and that is why it's not working. I guess my friend will have no choice but to buy a printer with a USB connection now. :(

If you would still like to try. Boot into Safe Mode, remove anything in Add/remove programs related to printers. Go to the Printers folder (in Control Panel) and delete any printers. Go to Device Manager and remove any printers. Reboot into normal Windows and install the latest drivers for Win 2000 (Edit: check the instructions/manual for if you need to have the printer running during driver installation or power-up/connect it at reboot).

HP has a good knowledge base on their website.

HP will probably respond if you email them.
