For years I've always "restarted" my PC after I install a new program.
I was wondering...would a "log off" (and come back to desktop) serve the same purpose as "restarting "...when it comes to doing it after installing a new program that modifies the registry in some way?
Re-phrased: What's the difference between "logging off" or "restarting" after the installation of a program that I know modifies the registry?

    Hi alst2002...

    Welcome to the BBS... :)

Log off username simply disconnects you from the network and permits someone else to log on. You would use this if you wanted to log off and someone else wanted to log on to the network very quickly.

Restart the computer will perform a reboot of the computer. This is similar to "shutting down" and then turning the PC back on. System resources such as memory will be refreshed when restarting. You may use this option if you are experiencing problems and want to start with a "clean slate ".

Shut down will close all applications and prepare the machine to be turned off. Some PCs will also "power off" during this process. Others will display a message when it's safe to turn off the power.

    Thank you, Dobhar...for the response!
But will "logging off" serve the same purpose as "restarting" (after
I install a program that modifies the registry)? alst2002 (aka Wayne)

    Hi Wayne...

No logging off is not the same as restarting. As stated logging off only disconnects you from the Network. If you install a program and it asks you to restart...Restart.

    OK, Kent...Thanks!
I suspected as much, but I direly wanted the log-off to suffice, since it gets one bactk to the desktop much quicker!
I'm not on any network...just a sole-user on a Win98SE system with 8 partitions (all with Win98 on 'em!!!)...but was just wondering if I could make some use of the "log-off" procedure!
Well...I definitely appreciate your sharing some of that wisdom!
    Agtain, thanks.
