Win 95 OSR2 Pent. II 266, 256 ram, HP Deskjet 820Cxi printer. My printer prints regular jobs OK. But I tried to clean the print heads and it locked the printer up. It just got to a point in the process and stopped. I had to shut the power off to the printer and manually extract the page. I thought that something may have corrupted the driver, so I clicked Start - Settings - Printers, removed the printer and reinstalled the software. It did not help and still locks up if I try to clean the heads. It will print a test page OK.

The only thing I can think of that is (or might be) different is that I had tried a Belkin F5U002 USB Parallel Adapter recently, but because it caused erratic (jerky) action of the mouse I disconnected it and disabled USB (reverted to the original setting) in the BIOS. I just checked in Control Panel and verified that USB is not listed in the add/remove software window. So, even though I can't remember exactly what I did to remove the software, it seems to be gone.

Do you know what is causing my printer to lock up? Can it be related to the parallel adapter software even though it is no longer installed?

Thanks for any help, Ed B

mattman, thanks for the response. I just now checked the add/remove programs screen in control panel and there is no software listed for the printer. I do have a HP scanner and a HP CD/RW drive that has software that can be removed, but nothing is listed for the printer.

It is my understanding that all one has to do to remove a printer in Win 95 is to go to Start - Settings - Printers - Right click on the printer icon - Delete. This is all that I can see that can be done, and this is exactly what I did. Then I followed the 'Wizard' to install the drivers for the printer, and it is working except for the "Clean print heads" command.

Thanks for the links to HP service information, I will explore those thoroughly and then if I haven't solved it, I'll email HP sepport.

Thanks again for your response I appreciate it very much.
