I know that if I type 1/2 in MS Word 2000, it will replace it with the 1/2 character. However, I have a large doc. with pasted recipes in it. I want to use a "replace" to do it from another typeface if TimesNewRoman doesnt have it.

In word, click the edit menu and select replace...
Then in the top box type 1/2 and in the replace box, hold the alt key and type 0189 and let go of alt. this should put a ½ symbol. then do the replace all.

Need to type 0189 from the numbers keypad at the right of your keyboard, and not the numbers keys below the F keys.

Thanks for all the replices I was able to use 188- 190 but could not work the CharMap to help me any more. Are there any other fractions like 1/8 and if so how can I find them all, other than entering all the Unicodes to see what comes up

Word comes with an "Equation Editor" that may do what you want:
    http://www.mathtype.com/en/products/ee/ee_tips.htm

Open up your word help file and from the index tab type eq which should be enough to get the topic equation or equation editor.

Its been a while but you access it through your toolbar>insert>object>equation editor.

This may be more trouble than your looking for now but it's good info to discover for future use. You can't use it if you don't know it's there.

    Notes:
For your current purpose you need only make one small equation. You can copy it and change/edit the superscript, subscript numbers to what ever you desire.

    1/2 - Alt 0189
    1/4 - Alt 0188
    3/4 - Alt 0190

    Start>Run...> charmap

There are many more in there
