I think there is an option that forces an X instead of the graphic in a downloaded webpage but I have forgotten it.

    Reminder please?

    Hi tenbob

assuming IE; try: Tools > Internet options > Advanced > "show image download placeholders" (in the multimedia section)

    maybe what you are after?

tenbob --You mean you want the X to appear instead of the graphic?
Or are you trying to see an image where now you see only an X (presumably red)?
Most people want to cure the latter and there has been lots written since there are quite a few reasons why this could occur. For example, simplest solutions could be to just to click "Refresh ", or right click on the X and then "Show Picture ".
In the "lots written" category are

To solve the former you could try many of these suggestions in reverse. Or if you want nothing but text, you could save the page as a .txt file. (Then you will also get lots of source code, too!! :) )

reading through again I realise I meant "Show Pictures" (multimedia section again close to the "placeholders" option of my earlier post)...

...but that doesn't result in a red X (for me anyway) I get the red square / green circle / blue triangle icon

is this a hosts file block thing perchance? - that will get you red X's if you want to block images from specific sites...

    best wishes, HJ.

    Hugh Jarss--
I get that when the page requires ActiveX controls to run.

    Jim -

now there's interesting! I've managed to get all sorts of odd things when nobbling various ActiveX options, the most annoying being alert boxes and the like - frinst the "Do you really want to log off BBS" box (!) refusing to appear until Alt-Tab to another task.

But I don't think I've managed to get the red/green/blue thing in any of the ways I've tried to defuse ActiveX yet. I do get the "this page requires ActiveX and may not display correctly" message regularly, the way it's set at the moment.

do you get the red/green/blue thing with a simple IE Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > (down to Multimedia) uncheck "Show Pictures "?

I get lots of little red X's - am running a pretty comprehensive Hosts file. I rather like those little red X's - I haven't accessed the server for the image, neither have I bleated anything coded after the question mark after the filename. Same logic as I use for those (thankfully rare) occasions when I'm forced into reading HTML email, only there the block I use is by preventing email client making http access to port 80. Same result though.

    very best wishes, HJ

I'll try the Right click to see if that shows the picture. There are no children here and I am not trying to block pictures.

If it is an ActiveX thing, I may be concerned with blocking some adverse activity but, if that is the setting, I dont remember where it was that I blocked that.

from your latest, it seems that what you are trying to achieve is to lose the X's rather than see more of them?

if the right-click thing does not yield the picture, I'd suspect a Hosts file redirect is at play here; perhaps not intentionally made by you yourself; installing anti-spyware software can do this for you... (all sorts of things can do this, even "rival" spyware!)

if you can't get the picture itself with a right-click, get its properties intead from the right-click menu; check the domain, which will probably be different from the domain the web page itself comes from (an adserver for example)

(you may be able to see this easier by hovering over the picture and looking in your status bar)(demo)

if the right-click thing does provide the picture, then more likely to be down to settings...

    best wishes, HJ.

    Hugh Jarss--
I would not know, I always leave "Show Pictures" checked. I just know that when I see that icon I have to change my ActiveX controls to Prompt or Enable if I want to access the page or see everything on the page.
I cannot remember many examples right now, but
    www.jibjab.com ,
which you should visit anyway just to see the really funny movies these guys make, will show you the icon under their title and many of the blocks will be empty if you have disabled ActiveX controls.
tenbob--You may remember I suggested you look at several references in my first post above. The RedX problem (I now understand you want to see the images and not the X) has many causes and therefore many solutions. They are all based on the fact that an image has not been properly transmitted to your PC.

    Jim -

thanks for the link, and bingo a multicoloured icon plus a few blanks - alas cannot try the movies at the moment as I'm back on the dinosaur, having obliterated the P3 with a firewall nightmare (gloom)

    tenbob -

along the lines of a setting you don't make yourself: when I recently used Spybot's "immunise" option (on the now dysfunctional P3) it blessed me with lots of cookie blocks - which resulted in lots of red Xs

if you can't remember where you made the setting, the reason might be that something made the setting for you

    best wishes, HJ

Hugh Jarss --It is possible that that icon is associated with sites that use Flash or Shockwave to work. But they require ActiveX so it is pretty much the same solution.
Go find someoneelse's PC so you can see jibjab. They really are funny short satires.
