We don't know what happened. One day all was well and fine, and then suddenly my sister has not been able to use her PC for several days because she continues to received notices of errors that eventually shut down her system.

I think we might possibly get through this if we could back it up to an earlier registry date, but I have not used Windows 98SE for almost 2 years and I just can't remember how to walk her through this.

As an example of some of her problems, when she first boots up she will get error messages such as:

    Program:C/Windows/system/CBA/PDS.exe
    Program:C/Windows/systerm/XFR.exe
    Windows/system/WUCRTUPD.exe
exception esock error in MODUL CLICKING.exe

We don't have a clue and don't understand why this is happening suddenly. If she could have gotten on-line, maybe she could have gotten some help somehow. But when your system constantly shuts down, that is hard to do. If ANYONE has any suggestions, I would love to hear them. And my sister would be eternally in your debt.

    Thank you.

    Hi,

Do a Scanreg Restore. Follow these instructions carefully.
Startup your computer, after the self test beep, press and hold the Control key to invoke the Windows 98 Startup menu.
From the Menu choose Command prompt and hit enter.
At the prompt type Scanreg /Restore and hit enter. (note: there is a space between Scanreg and /).
Choose the most recent Registry backup marked as "Started " and hit enter and enter again.
Windows should now start, if it doesn't then repeat the above process choosing the next older Registry backup.

sandilew, Normally WindowsSE scanreg, creates a new registry backup each time you boot/reboot. There are usually 5 backup registries R000 to R004 - unless you change these settings in scanreg.ini
Of course, I do not even know if your sister's machine runs scanreg when it boots.
So I doubt you can restore from one of these backups, as you/she have for sure, tried rebooting many times - each time saving a bad registry.
There seem to be registry problems tho' and the first thing I would do
is Start Button/Run and type regclean.exe - hope she has it on the PC.
    Reboot after the regclean finishes.
If bad boot again, we will have to do some serious registry editing.
    The HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
must be cleaned of the apps that you mention but appear to be no longer
    on the PC
    regards

sandilew: These are not complete error messages. They reference the program involved but not what the actual error is.

Post back what the exact errors are.

Hi WhitPhil, Agree error messages posted are not complete.
Imagine these two people on the telephone trying to note the exact details ...
Sometimes very difficult to jot it all down in detail.
Lot easier maybe if sister posts something detailed from the error messages.
Suspect "cannot find application" or such is missing from error messages.
I still think the Run registry keys have errors.
    regards

Scanreg only make one backup per Calendar day. And only then if Scanregistry is loading at bootup.

However you can force a new one to be made at any time if you go to C:\Windows\Sysbckup folder and delete the RB00x.cab files. And restart Windows.

I myself do that everytime I make MAJOR changes to the SE System.

The 5 count and how to change is correct.

I don't think it is "cannot find application" errors. These alone won't cause the PC to shutdown. You would just click a few of the errors, and you would end up at the desktop.

Regardless, it's impossible to recommend solutions until you have full details about the problem.

    Can't thank you enough

I want to thank each and every one of you for trying so hard to help me, help my sister get her machine up and running again.

Alas, I was not able to be home today. So I called her first thing this morning with the instructions on how to go back to an earlier registry, but I forewarned her that it was quite possible that she had already booted up too often for it to be of any help. And that was true.

When I finally arrived back home this evening, the first thing I did was to call my sister. Since she was having no success, she finally packed up the computer and took it off to someone she hoped would be able to get it up and running. When I spoke to her she said the young man said he had it working OK, and he wrote an explanation for her and put it with the PC. But, at the time I talked to her the family was watching a movie they had rented and she had not yet set up the PC again or read the note explaining what was done.

Isn't this just like a baby sister. Called me all in tears the other night, caused me to miss the entire Presidential debate on the TV while I had her try everything I could possibly think of, post help messages to you folk, and call her first thing this morning. And now here I am left sitting and waiting for her to watch a movie before she checks to see if the young man actually did repair her PC or not? Oh well. I will promise all of you one thing. As soon as I discover what happened I will be back here posting that information for all of you as well.

Again, thank you so much. I do appreciate your trying so hard to help us.

    Hi BillyBob,
You can get scanreg to back up with various options - including more than once per calendar day - eg per boot.
I find this useful sometimes. If you booted at 7 PM, installed an app at 8PM
had problems with it and then uninstalled it at 820 PM, you can get back to
good system files from 7PM boot to repair whatever damage the installation of the app may have caused. Also I have 10 RB files not 5 so I can very
likely get back to yesterday's data if needed.
To handle the restore from more than 5 RBxxx files you need the excellent DOS batch program posted on these boards.
    regards

    Sis is fixed!!

My Sister's computer is repaired, and up and running once again, and everything is working just fine.

The young man that repaired it told her that it was a bad installation of some program that had caused the problem, most likely from an updated of some type. Sis doesn't care which program, she is just happy to have it working again. She is finally able to receive her e-mail. I would have been a bit more curious as to exactly what program caused the problem, but that is neither here nor there.

I just wanted to let all of you know.

Again, thank you so much for your efforts to help. They were greatly appreciated by me.

I suggest now that she ( or someone ) go to C:\Windows\sysbckup folder and delete all of the existing RB00X.cab files.

Then restart Windows and let it make a new one. Then go to the mentioned folder and make sure it has made a new one.

Alias: At this point you DO NOT want the old ones hanging around.

If it does not then there are some thing that need to be checked.

    merlin

It is true that changes can be be made. But on here unless we are informed otherwise we need to stick with the default Windows rules.

    Thank you

I will pass your message on to my Sister, and hope she pays attention. But she may not know how to do what you suggest.

Just the same, if that is the case, I will ask her to have the young man that repaired it do it for her.

    Thank you so much.
