Just got a new Dell computer with WIN XP with NIS 2004 preinstalled. Have not activated NIS 2004 nor have I accessed the internet yet. Due to significant problems with, and subsequently, uninstalling NIS 2004, I would like to get rid of it now and use AVG and either ZA or Kerio.

Question 1 - Is the XP uninstaller sufficient to get rid of NIS prior to installing AVG?

Question 2 - Should I download AVG to the old computer and copy to the new one prior to accessing the internet with the new one?

    virginia,

I have used the Norton Uninstaller a couple times on older versions (2002 & 2003) and it has worked for me. You could run it a couple of times just to be sure. Once uninstalled, I would download your new AV program to your new system. Just get on the net, download, and get off. You should be fine. I would think that that would be better then trying to copy the program over.

    Hi virginia,

Make sure that if you do go on the net with the new computer that XP's firewall is on, Dell does, or at least used to have XP's firewall running by default.

I would download your new AV program to your new system.

I don't think it makes any difference where you download the setup software for the AV or the 3rd party firewalls. I personnaly would be more comfortable to do that on the old system where your defenses are in place.

    Regards - Charles

Thanks for the responses Mike and Charles.

I don't have a Norton Uninstaller. The preinstalled NIS doesn't have an "uninstaller" feature. All I have is the XP "Program Removal" feature. Any other options?

First step, get Symclean.exe but don't use it yet.

Second step, turn off Norton but as noted, make sure your firewall is running first.

Third step, get, load, update your new AV.

Fourth step, use the XP add/remove and uninstall Norton.

Fifth step, run symclean.exe to remove any remaining traces of Norton. It may miss a few odd bits but basically, the app will now be gone.

    Virginia,
Any particular reason you don't even want to give NIS 04 a chance? You already paid for it, and it's a solid dependable internet security software. Uninstalling Norton is not easy, even when you follow Symantec instructions, line by line. Since you have a new install, you could just reinstall XP, if they gave you a real XP cd. Then you might lose some other preinstalled software, but Norton would be gone.

Thanks to all for the responses. All is well now. I have AVG up and running and NIS uninstalled. Apparently the XP uninstaller does a good job. When I ran the SYMClean tool, it informed me that there were "...no additional items that need to be removed ". (I hope, I hope, I hope)

Johanna - I had finished the action by the time I saw your reply.

I used NIS 2001 without any problems and when Symantec said support for that issue would cease, I purchased the NIS 2004 program. After I got it installed, I immediately began having all kinds of problems that I had never experienced with 01. Probably due to my level of expertise or new features that I didn't understand. In any case, after wasting many hours chasing solutions, and with little support from Symantec, I gave up and tried uninstalling 04. Had as much problem trying to uninstall as I did using it. Finally had to get expert help to get all of the stuff out that 04 left behind. Then I said, "Never again ".

    Couldn't agree more.

Again thanks to all. As I have a lot of other programs I will install on this new Dell, and another that is on order now, I have a question regarding the use of Utility/Install/Uninstall programs as indicated by Mike. I will pose that question in another forum.
