    Hello guru's,

I had to change the name of a win98 computer. This pc has a printer that we all use.
With all my win 2000 pc's I simply disconnected the old and "mapped" the new. Happy days.

On my XP's I cannot even see the win98 pc in "networking neighborhood."

From the win98 pc, I can see the XP's but not map to them.

Pings are good in both directions.

    I have a peer-to-peer network.

    Any ideas?

glen - part of your issue (XP can't see 98) sounds like a firewall issue or possibly an issue with name resolution. Quick way to check that:
    - assuming the 98 PC has an ip address of 192.168.0.4 and a share named 98-share
    - then from an XP machine click on start, on run, key in \\192.168.0.4\98-share and click OK.
    - what happens? Do use your actual IP address and an existing share name though.

For the "98 connecting to XP" part, if it was working before the name change on the 98 PC, it sounds sorta strange but should be possible to figure out.

Since you mention XPs, 2Ks, and at least one 9x it sounds like a decent size network.

How are your IP addresses assigned? Static, via DHCP, via BOOTP?

Are all the PCs in the same workgroup?

Are you requiring a logon with username and non-blank password for all the PCs?

Newt, thanks for your reply and the ideas

Well, I went to the \etc\hosts file on the XPs, entered the IP and Hostname for the W98 station. I now have full access from XPs to the W98 box.

What is still baffling me is the fact that my W2Ks stations do not have the W98 PC in their \etc\hosts file yet I only had to map to the W98 PC by its new name and all was well.

It must have something to do with how XP does it authentication. Oh well, back burner research.

    Thanks again

Glad you got it working and I hear you about 'back burner' items. Got a fair few of those myself. :D
