We are running a Windows 2000 AD environment in native mode with two domain controllers. Each DC is running Windows 2000 Advanced Server w/SP3, DNS (AD integrated), DHCP (each has it's own IP scopes) and WINS (push/pull relationship). Everything is working fine except when I try to open or edit domain Group Policies from my Windows 2000 Professional w/SP4 workstation using Active Directory Users and Computers. I get the exact error as described in KB 257435 with the only difference I'm not attempting this on a Windows 2000 Server. I've tried the "resolution" to no avail and other suggestions I've found Googling either don't apply or have no affect.

I can open the domain Group Policies from both domain controllers logged on as myself as well as any other workstation with the adminpak installed. This tells me there is nothing wrong with DNS or the GPO's but just with my workstation. What puzzles me the most is this is a fresh install of Windows 2000 Pro SP4.

I think the next thing I'd try is removing the workstation from the domain to a workgroup, shutting it down, removing it's WINS and DNS records, allowing long enough for the removals to propagate out, and then putting it back on the domain.

If that doesn't help I think you have to assume you have a blown network install on the box even if it is a new load.

Ressurecting the thread from the dead :)

I tried what you said Newt but to avail. Since I know this is no doubt DNS relates I came across an interesting article on the KB, 826743. We do have a single-label domain so I thought I'd give this a whirl but no change. (As an aside we have found that some W2K SP3 machines have the problems notes in the KB article so it's not just SP4 or 2K3 boxes that are affected. I'm betting this change was made in a hotfix that's included in SP4.)

I can still access Group Policy from the domain controllers that are running Win2K Advanced Server with SP3 and the above KB change, as well as from other workstations. We do have another workstation that is exhibiting the same problems as mine that is a brand new, fresh install so I'm still puzzled.

Anything else different about your workstation? More than one NIC?

My workstation does have two NIC's. The on board NIC is disabled in Device Manager but maybe I'll try uninstalling the driver and disabling it in the BIOS. That way my gig PCI NIC will be the only one Windows sees.

Thanks for the hint on what to try next, Angel!
