The most part of my netscape bookmarks (soo many) seems to have disappeared!
but if i try an accurate search, SOME of them re-appear but they can't be deleted or cut or moved (it's not in my interests but they're not 'normal' bookmarks). what has happened?
the other threads say to check the propriety of bookmarks.html file , but my settings are allright...
i used to love netscape... some days ago.

    Welcome to the Forum Grave.Adorn.Cow!

    Grave.Adorn.Cow,

You will not be able to edit Bookmarks in the "Search" function. To edit you must use the Bookmark Manager

Your bookmarks.html file may be corrupt, and what you can do is this:
Replace the bookmarks.html file with the most recent backup

If you have no backup, then try this workaround:
    Close Netscape and Quick Launch:
    Navigate to the *.slt folder
    (Profile Folder Location)
Rename the bookmarks.html file to Xbookmarks.html
    Open Netscape
A pristine copy of bookmarks.html will be created
To ensure that the new file is working, add a bookmark
If this works, then open the Bookmark Manager
    Click on Tools | Import
    Import the Xbookmarks.html file
    Your bookmarks should be restored

If the Personal Toolbar is no longer viewable:
Open the Bookmark Manager and move the Bookmarks in the Personal Toolbar to a newly created folder
Delete the empty Personal Toolbar Folder
Next, highlight the newly created folder which contains the bookmarks
Click on View | Set as Personal Toolbar

    HTH,

    Ramona

What version of Netscape are you using?

When you open the bookmarks.html file in Windows Explorer, do you right click, and open in WordPad, or Notepad? Is the file totally blank, with no text at all?

If in Netscape you can see the Bookmarks you listed, what happens if you click on any of the links, do they work?

Do a "Find" for bookmarks.html and see if you may have more than one file.
Start | Find | Files or Folders

    sorry for my retard,
    i have Netscape 7.2 ,
if i open bookmarks.htm in notepad i see only the default bookmarks that i posted in my last reply...
At the moment i have no bookmarks.htm file at all! I first renamed and then remove it, but no emergency-file has created. I still have a lot of old bookmarks, all unsorted in just one folder, that i reached thanks to a silly search like: location contains : http://[/] (don't know how long will stay there, but now i've saved ;-))
I still miss my bookmarks from two-three months ago and all passwords too are gone....

    Grave.Adorn.Cow.,

I notice that you call the file bookmarks.htm. This may be a typo, but the file name is bookmarks.html. Note the " l ".

When you first discovered that you had lost your bookmarks and passwords, was this after a crash, or abnormal shutdown? What OS do you run?

I have Windows Xp, and I dunno this was after , but there's been some forced or strange shut down because of memory lacking or something else.
Yes, it was a typo, anyway i always search for 'bookmarks' with no extensions at all.
I guess that they are lost forever...but what can i do for preventing,(sorry this can be no sense, but ì'm not english :( -->) at least exporting periodically?
    thank you

    Hi,
sorry to hear about your problems. I have not heard of a problem exactly like yours, and since it is not clear what caused the problem,, there is no way to prevent it. But, you can back up the individual file (i.e. bookmarks.html).
I have backups all over my computer. So, I would never miss a step if I were to lose settings. Actually, my favorite backup is to have to a working Mozilla or even Mozilla Firefox. Their bookmarks file are interchangeable with Netscape's. Also bookmark.htm of Netscape4.x can be renamed to bookmarks.html, and used as if it never was changed.
And, since most people do not have extremely large files, you can back up to a floppy. My file, at its largest was less than 180 Kb. In fact, I updated my backup on a floppy, as I type. If anything goes wrong, you can copy the file from the floppy to the Profile .slt of your program.
