i had a trojan th other day and removed it with trendmicro/mcafee..it deleted a 'cab' file.

from that point on my cd writer doesnt work and i have a steady orange light on my battery light i assume (its the one that looks like a tin can)

everything looks fine in my device manager but it wont open, my DVD ROM works fine and opens but my cd writer does not.

    Hi

Have you tried re installing your cd-writing software. Also the 'tin-can' looking light is the hard drive indicator, the battery one will be on its side....

Also try uninstalling the writer from the device manager, and reboot for it to be detected and reinstalled.

    Hi

When you say it won't "open ", does that mean that the tray will not come out? One reason for that can be that the it has a CD-RW disk in the drive and the burning program will not release it. If you have the Nero (Ahead) program INCD, look for the INCD icon in the system tray, right-click on it and select "eject" (I am not sure about the Adaptec program).

Can also try -> My Computer right-click on the drive and select "eject ", but I doubt this would have an effect, it would probably need the suggestions of paddyslammer and Paul.

Next step up from Paul's suggestion. Remove the IDE controller in Device Manager which that drive is attached to (sounds like there is a harddisk attached to the same controller). If you have motherboard/chipset drivers installed it will list something like "Intel (Bus Master) IDE controller" or "VIA (Bus Master) IDE controller ", otherwise you do not have motherboard/chipset drivers installed...then, I would suggest you find and install them or you may continue to get these problems.

    Matt
