I had the firefox update working fine.

My husband sold his computer (mac user) and installed netscape on my laptop (windows XP).

Due to my husband expecting everything to work, with no problems at all (again, he is a mac user) my world fell apart.

Netscape installed, worked for two minutes till he turned it off. When he tried to turn it on, it didn't open.

My firefox update didn't open either, and I found the old version of firefox, so I am using that for the time being.

Now when I go to update, I am told "Error occured during installation- Navigator: 5 "

Same thing when I try to upload Netscape.

Then, when I try to remove the programs I am told " 0: Uninstall log folder not found:" then on the line below it the error message says: "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Netscape\Netscape\7.2(en)\uninstall\uninstall log folder "

Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Welcome to the Forum, solsra!

    solsra,

    1. Did you have Netscape 7.1 on your PC prior to updating to Netscape 7.2?

    2. If so, was 7.2 installed over 7.1?

    3. When you use the term "update" you are referring to installations of the new versions, right?

    Error 5 = Access Denied

I think what you need to do is to start over again with clean installs of both Netscape 7.2, and Firefox. But first, I need the answers to 1., 2., and 3.

    Thanks!

    Ramona

    1. I didn't have netscape at all prior to him installing 7.2

    2. Nope. See above.

    3. I am referring to a newer version of Firefox. I had the 9.2, then updated to 1.0pr about a day before he installed Netscape 7.2

Then, neither worked, and I cant uninstall to start with a clean install.

    Does that help?

    solsra,

Hopefully, we're going to get you to a place where you can uninstall Netscape 7.2, and Firefox 1.0PR.

Install Netscape 7.2 over itself, and it should replace the uninstall log. Now try to uninstall Netscape 7.2, using Add/Remove. Do the same for Firefox.

If successful, after the uninstall, also remove these folders:
    C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE\1.7.2_2004080415
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    Go to C:\WINDOWS\Temp
Clear ALL files in the Temp folder

    REBOOT YOUR PC

Now reinstall Netscape 7.2 using the full installer, and you should have no further problems. Reinstall Firefox 0.10.1, which is a new release which addresses security vulnerabilities. See the sticky at the top of the Forum:
Important Security Update for Firefox 0.10.1 PR.

That was the first thing that I tried.

When I try to install the programs over themselves, I get the "error occured during installation- Navigator:5 "

and a new one "Error occured during installation- firefox:5 "

So I cant install fresh copies to uninstall them, so what next?

By the way, thank you very much for helping. No one anywhere else knows what to do.

    Install Status Log

a few things do install during that process, and this is the end excerpt from the Install Status Log

    Uncompressing Xpcom Succeeded: 0

    XPInstall Start
    Cross-Platform COM: 0 OK
    Firefox Browser: 5
    XPInstall End

    Thats from Firefox.

Mozilla Suite also isn't installing. (I thought I would try that, to see if I could update from there.)

This is the last lines from Netscapes Install Status Log

    Uncompressing Xpcom Succeeded: 0

    XPInstall Start
    Navigator: 5
    XPInstall End

Make sure you're uninstalling the old version before you put the new one on!

    *sigh*

Unless there are any new ideas, I guess I will just wait until the new firefox comes out next year or so, and try then.

    1.0PR isn't worth a reformat right now.

Thank you all! I will check back to see if anyone has new ideas!

Thank you specially to Ramona! (There is a wonderful pageant in Southern California about Ramona.. if you are ever in Hemet in June go see it!)

    solsra,

    EDIT:

When your husband installed Netscape 7.2, did he use Administrator privileges to install? Someone just pointed out this paragraph to me, in the readme.txt file in Netscape 7.2, C:\Program Files\Netscape\Netscape:
We can only hope that this is your problem, before you manually uninstall.
    _________________________________

I haven't forgotten your problem, so don't feel abandoned... I think that you are going to have to manually delete Netscape and Firefox. I hate to ever tell someone to do this, but I see no recourse for you, since you are unable to install and uninstall.

    From this thread: http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29135
You may have to uninstall manually if netscape's install log is missing. Without the log, the uninstall cannot know which files to uninstall.

First you should try to manually run the uninstaller.

Either one of these should start the uninstaller, assuming you have an install log.

    C:\program files\Netscape\Netscape\uninstall\NSUninst.exe
    C:\WINNT\NSUninst.exe

Additionally, try to run the GRE uninstaller. One of these should work, assuming you have an install log.

    C:\program files\Common Files\mozilla.org\GRE\1.4f2003062408\uninstall\GREUninstall.exe
    C:\WINNT\GREUninstall.exe

If these fail, you may have to uninstall netscape by manually deleting files and registry entries.

    good luck

    tranquilo
    ----

It's possible that Netscape may reinstall if you can get the GRE removed.

    The install log is named:

    c:\program files\netscape\netscape\uninstall\install_wizard*.log
    c:\program files\common
    files\mozilla.org\GRE\1.4f_2003062408\uninstall\install_wizard*.log

    If no joy:
To manually delete the programs, delete all files and folders pertaining to Netscape and Firefox from C:\Program Files:

C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox (Be careful not to delete the older version you are currently using)
Do you have it installed in a different folder?

I have an "UninstallFirebird.exe" file in C:\Windows, and whether or not you will, remains to be seen. If you use it, it may also uninstall both versions of Firefox.

If you are comfortable editing the Registry, then you can do a "Find" in the Registry for Firefox, and remove any keys found. Ensure that you back up the Registry before editing. If you aren't comfortable editing the Registry, and have no experience, then don't do it!

I do have this information on what to delete for Netscape 7.2, from the thread mentioned above, (tranquilo). This is going on the Assumption that you have no other Netscape or Mozilla browser installed, other than Netscape 7.2 and Firefox. You probably need to log on as administrator to delete all the files, folders, and Registry keys:

    Registry Keys to Delete

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Mozilla\Netscape 7.2
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\mozilla.org\GRE\1.7.2_2004080415

    okay

I have deleted everything that contains GRE, Firefox, Mozilla, Netscape, or anything that has anything to do with those.

Firefox and Netscape are finally not showing up in my add/remove programs list.

so I am going to reboot, try a fresh install, and then reboot again. Hopefully that will work. I hope to report back with 1.0pr soon.

*salutes* if I dont come back, send someone to my house to save my laptop from my knife collection. :p

He was using his profile, but as far as I know it had administrator priviliges.

To complicate things further, the reinstall didn't work, now the old firefox wont install either, and I deleted his profile in an attempt to fix my problems.

A different way to do it?

Through the main mozilla site there is a link to a zip of 9.3, and because it doesn't have to be installed (the whole program is in the zip) it works fine on my computer.
So I was wondering if anyone knows where I could find a copy of 1.0PR as a zip?

I dumped Firefox as it needs some serious fixing! Went back to IE. Firefox dumped all the bookmarks, wouldn't open when using some of my html programs from the taskbar etc. It has some features I really liked but was not worth the hassle especially dumping all the bookmarks! (and I am not the only one this has happened to).

I don't know about this dumping. As you may or may not know all these programs based on Mozilla/Netscape have one thing in common. They have a program which does not have any personal information, and the Profile which does. Not knowing your OS, I am entering this, all about locations of profiles
You information should be there. One of the problems is that you may have to create a new profile, which is easy. But, if you modify the Target of the shortcut (right click|properties} by adding information about your profile, like this......firefox.exe" -p profilename. If you just need to create a new profile, have only the -p, and the Profile Manager will come up, and finally, if you can access FF, then you can go to the HD, and manually copy a good bookmarks.html file. There are other tricks, but any program which is not part of the operating system will require some work. At this point, I think I fully tamed FF1.01pr, and I have it linked to Thunderbird mail. So far so good.
