When I click the Dial-Up Networking icon on the NT4.0 desktop (that used to connect me to my ISP) I now get this error message:

    “Dial-Up Networking
Cannot laod the Remote Access Connection Manager service. Error 711 RasMan initialization failure. Check the eventlog.â€

    What is this telling me?

FWIW: The modem is a Robotics Megahertz on a PC card. Robotics tells me the Rasman file is part of NT4 OS.

    What does Error 711 mean?
How can I search for RasMan?
Can I download it using another pc and then install it on the laptop using a floppy?

    Thanks for your advice.

It's telling you that there is more detail in the event logs that might help in finding a fix.

Click on Start, on Programs, on Administrative Tools, and open your event viewer.

Locate the event and open it. Copy the text part of the contents and post that along with the other information like source, event ID, etc. to this thread and we'll try to track down and solve the problem.

Newt: I'd like to send you the Event Log, per your instructions but i don't know how to insert it or attach it here. I gather attachments are not allowed.

In any event, the text part of the message reads, "Remote Access Connection Manager failed to start because it could not load one or more Communication DLLs. Ensure that your communication hardware is installed and
then restart your computer. If the problem persists reintall the Remote Access Service. "

Now what? Thanks much for your interest. ....wdc

    When did this stop working?

Have you installed any hotfixes recently? In Add/Remove programs, do you have Q823803 installed?

    Angel71:

    1. The laptop had been able to send/receive email nine months ago; then I stopped using it; when I restarted it about four months ago I discovered the modem problem. In any event I never did do anything dramatic with it; certainly no hot fixes (until you used the term I was unfamiliar with it; but see below.)

    2. Q823803: I am (obviously) confused but FWIW:

    When I did a Find Q823803*.* I found "O files. "

    When I did a Find Q823*.*, I found one file (q823980i.exe).

And when I doubleclicked it, the PC did an extracting operation and showed a screen that said
    Windows NT HotFix setup
Windows NT 4.0 has been updated.

What is a HotFix? What is Q823803? What is Q23980i.exe?

Thanks for your help. .... wdc

wdc - the only option for the event log detail is to do as you apparently did with the body and copy/paste it. There was more information though including an event ID and some other stuff that will be helpful. It's unfortunate but the ability to create a text copy of an event log with a mouse click was only added with 2000. You can attach pictures if you are a contributing forum member but otherwise, not. The attached picture is an NT4 event and I marked the items you need to include.

As a follow-on to Angel71, what service pack are you running? It needs to be 6a. If you do not already have it installed, get it from Here and load it.

The 'hot fixes' are various patches and bug fixes that were found after a service pack was released and take care of updating the service pack. Lots of them close security holes. Once you get the latest service pack (which will include all the earlier hot fixes) then you only need the ones that came after it was released.

Newt: I have downloaded sp6patch_i386.exe (the NT4 Service Pack 6a) to a floppy and am ready to install it into the NT4 laptop. How do I do that? What do I use to copy it (WORD?) and where do I place the file? ..wdc
