    Hi guys

There's a new USB update from Microsoft at:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q307271

The update is a executable with only 3 cab files in it (only extracts).

How can you install this update? It just extracts to a directory?

If you rightclick on the .inf's and select install - to does nothing (extracted from the "update.cab" in the update)

There's a file called usbuhci.sys._p1 that I wish to install manually
Usually you can expand compressed files with the filename.ex_ format with:
    expand -r filename.ex_ --> filename.ext (uncompressed)

but this is in a weird format usbuhci.sys._p1 - how can I expand the file to usbuhci.sys and install the update manually??

It is prob just patching instructions for the existing usbuchi.sys file.

Hope someone can help - XP's USB implementation sux bigtime more so than in 2k.

According to Microsoft: This is a Dynamic Update File that's used (in theory) when you install XP (mass deployment of XP by admins). The .exe is not in the other M$oft patch formats but extracts only (aarrg) you need to run winnt32 (i386 dir) off the Install CD with winnt32.exe /duprepare: "c:\extracted location" to prepare the patch files (it did nothing my my PC). Then you need to install the Updates with Win. With: winnt32 /dushare: "c:\location of prepared files ".

It's supposed to updated the original CD Setup files (which it copies to the HD) and then install WinXP. There's a new Install Screen called Dynamic Update when Windows Installs. Didn't install the file on my System regardless.

Does anyone know of a way to install it correctly - abviously WITHOUT reinstalling WinXP.

    Thanks
    Debug

    update

Whew this is a MS play on words, eh! I don't get it either? I don't need the download but I did try the install, nada. Instead of "save to disk" try "open now ", 'sposed ta begin install from there.

    Hi

    Thanks for replying,

I had a look there again - and it seems that the reason for not supplying a proper patch is because it's not tested enough. My modem def freaks every odd hour - and consumes 20% resources just being plugged in on USB. (even with a new PCI USB board)

I've installed all available updates on XP - and it seems the usbuhci.sys file is still on 2600.0 version wise.

Actually re-installed this weekend with the update procedure (/dushare:...) prior to installation - and it does display the extra dialog "updating" but don't think it actually updated the file :((

I've just had a look through the system and it seems there's a newer file with ver 2600.14 in some setup dir off the Windows directory.

Will replace the older one in a while ... hold thumbs.

I keep all the patches on disk and simply re-apply them apon re-installation - nifty since the Java update is 5 megs alone. Nice to install your system with all the patches applied.

Still wonder how one would install those Dynamic Update Microsoft patches :(

    Regards

When you first install WinXP, during setup it will ask you if you want to Download the updated Setup files. When you click yes, this update will be downloaded (and presumably) be installed. This feature is refered to as Dynamic Update.

The download is for Sys admins who download these updates for distribution in their orginization. Users installing XP will connect to the network share with the Dynamic Update content, instead of connecting to MS over the 'Net....

    Hi Arie,

I think we got that much information together about Dynamic Updates.

The question here is how to apply them without reinstalling Windows.

    Hi

Micro$oft should have attached a note saying: Patch only for NEW users who Might experience problems - ***** you if you have trouble with your current current install.
