crossover limited or no connectivity

hey,
Im new to networking and only recently set up a network between two of my computers using a piece of crossover cable. the network was working fine untill i installed XP sp2, shortly after it came up with the limited or no connectivity warning. after viewing the ' "Limited or no connectivity" Network Error in Service Pack 2' i checked to see if my computer was experiencing the same problems with the ip. sure enough it was and the same "Unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out." error came up when i tried to renew the ip.

i dont have a router so i cant reset it. what should i do? any help would be great.

Easiest solution would probably be to assign a fixed/static IP address and subnet mask to each PC.

192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 with both using 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask should work fine.

Also, when you are not connected to the internet, try turning off the firewall on the XP machine(s) and post back with the results.

I assigned both the computers static IP’s and the subnet mask you suggested. The limited connectivity warning went away immediately and I was able to share files and printing with the other computer. The other computer still cannot connect to the internet. I have disabled the windows firewalls on both computers and it still cannot connect. Any ideas on what I should do?

How are you connecting to the internet now and what program (like ICS maybe) are you using to 'share' the modem?
