I attached 2 XP machines via a Linksys wireless router configured as a access point to a Win 2000 LAN with MS Proxy Server 2.0. Every thing works except email on the XP boxes. I get "Host not found" with Outlook and Outlook Express. One machine has the Proxy client on it - the other no. Windows 2000 Pro and Win98 machines configured in identical manner are able to resolve email hosts. The email server in question is outside the network (internet).
    What am I missing?
    TIA,
    Jim

XP Firewall is off. Norton Anti-V is off. DHCP is from Windows 2000 server.
Both XP boxes are geting IP addresses correctly. Win2000 pro and 98 clients no problem. The XP clients now have 2 adapters wired and wireless should I be looking there? I excluded that because I only get one IP address when I "IPCONFIG "
    Thanks for responding.

Let me make sure I have the players all correct.

    Domain? If so, AD style?

If domain, the XP should be XP-pro. If so, is simple file sharing turned off?

You say IPCONFIG /ALL only shows one NIC. Did you mean only one configured or only one or did you not use the /all switch when you ran the command?

Also what would be useful to know is how you are connecting to the external mailserver: by name or IP address. If by name, have you tried entering the remote server's IP address rather than name?

I assume you are connecting to the remote server via POP3 to collect the mail.

Newt: AD yes Domain yes, XP Pro yes Simple file sharing don't know
IPCONFIG /All shows wireless adapter with a proper internal IP address and a diconnected bridge from a previous network connection( one of the clients - the other does not.

Reggie:You assume correctly about external mail server. I will try by IP address again.

Simple File Sharing is an attempt to make things easier for home users and to allow XP-pro to play nice more easily with XP-home (where simple file sharing is the only option).

On a domain it is a very bad idea. Easy to check. From Windows Explorer

No, on the simple file sharing. I did not get a good look at the XP clients today as people were working on them. Will try again tomorrow.

I figure it out. The XP client user seems to work when "administrator" rights are given. Also the wireless router setup page needed the "Domain" value filled in. This is interesting because an identical setup with Win2000 Pro clients
and Win98 clients did not need that extra value. Also, the XP client wanted the Proxy client installed while the Win2000 clients did not require it. I seeem to remember when I added the Win2000 clients several years ago with the Proxy Server update, Microsoft suggested not installing the Proxy client to the Win2000 clients. Please correct me if I am wrong-Thanks for the help.
