I would say create the w2k install diskettes to start the install or boot from a floppy with cd rom drivers on it and then start the install.

I tried it with a windows 98 boot floppy. I formatted the harrdrive , accessed the CD and used the WINNT.EXE. It copies a bunch of files and restarts. Then I get some general protection fault. Any help will be much appriciated

Check the HCL to make sure that all the components in the server is compatible with win2k. The site is http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/

If all components compatible, go to another computer and put the CD in. Grab 4 blank floppies. Navigate to <cdrom>:\bootdisk and run makeboot.exe. Make the four floppies.

On the server, put the CD in and put floppy 1 in the drive. This will avoid setup from copying the CD to the local disk and start setup immediatly. Hope this helps.
