I'm kinda new to this mp3 stuff -this question is so basic that I hesitate to ask... but here goes...

In order to clear up some hard-drive space I moved a whole bunch of mp3s on to CD-RW data disks using Nero. I thought everything was going fine, but when I go to view the contents of the disks using Windows Explorer it turns out I cannot see any details except file name, type, date and size - even when I specify them on the Details Options. (but when I copy the files back to my hard-drive - the detail info is again visible!) What gives?

My problem is that the view of the mp3s on the CD-RWs is sorted by file name and is a total jumble - I can't organize them by artist, title, album, track #, etc. Is this standard for Windows Explorer? Is there a file utility out there which would allow me to view and sort the CD files on detail fields? Otherwise I'm going to have to load everything back on the hard drive and rename all these mp3s perfectly.

Please help - even if it is only to suggest another forum for this question.

Thanks, brooklynspo - Norwalk, CT USA

You could organise them into folders, perhaps Artists A - B, etc, or Type of Music, e.g. Rock, Classical. Then within the sub-folders, if necessary, you could insert 001, 002 at the front of the filename so that they play in the sequence you want them to play.

    ****, Thanks.

I was afraid you were going to say that. - so I'm looking at reloading all the CD-RWs back on to my hard-drive and renaming the files and creating a folder structure for the new disks. ****.

Please explain - anyone - why is the tag info available when the files are on my hard-drive but not available when they are on a Data CD? The info is there - somewhere (!), on the CD - I know that because when I load the files back on the hard-drive - voila the tags are back. Isn't there some file manager that can "peek" into the CD files to get the tag info?

I understand people rename their mp3s just for this purpose - so they can find stuff on CDs and determine the play order - but I am trying to offload stuff onto CD-RW BEFORE I go through renaming process. To this newbie, reading the tag info off of Data CDs seems like such a basic function. N'est-ce pas?

I only use CD-R for copying but I would have thought that you could create your folder structure on the CD-RW then move/drag the files to their respective folders. Right click, rename will cure the sequencing problem.

Incidentally, on my CD-Rs the tag information is retained when they are played on a PC but the actual filename is displayed when they are played on a DVD player/television.
